Patrol car hydroplanes
into bridge support
A Forsyth police officer was unharmed after totaling his patrol car trying to respond
to an emergency fire call at Forsyth Garden Apartments. Officer Willlie Lee Barkley,
26, was traveling northbound on Hwy. 83 with his lights and siren activated in a
downpour when he hit deep water underneath the 1-75 bridge, hydroplaned and
spun counterclockwise before slamming his rear end into a bridge support on the
opposite side. The city's 2010 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car appeared to be a to
tal loss. The accident happened at around 7.30 p.m. and the Georgia State Patrol
handled the accident. (Photo/Will Davis)

D og clings to life
after throat slit
BY RICHARD DUMAS
A brown and white
female bulldog is recover
ing at a Forsyth veteri
nary clinic after it was
brought into the Monroe
County pound with its
neck slit nearly in half on
July 7.
The dog, whose name is
Hope, can only eat while
standing on its hind legs
after a cable wire nearly
severed her neck. The
wire was still around
Hope's neck when she was
brought to Dr. Butler
Caldwell's veterinary
office, where emergency
surgery was performed.
Janet Smith, the kennel
manager for Save A Pet,
said Hope's owner is
unknown. Forsyth police
dispatch received an
anonymous call several
weeks ago about a dog
with its throat cut on
Union Hill Drive near
Hope, a dog found with its
throat nearly severed, is hang
ing on to life. (Editor’s note: The
decision was made to publish
the photo so that readers can
see what happened and per
haps find the perpetrator.)
Hwy. 83 South. Forsyth
police chief Keith Corley
said a dispatcher notified
the Monroe County dog
catcher, who located the
dog and took it to the
pound, which then
informed Save A Pet.
Hope was found to have
a severed trachea and
megaesophagus, making
it difficult to breathe and
impossible to eat. Smith
said Caldwell's staff has
taken "excellent care" of
Hope, but that she is not
"out of the woods yet."
Smith said she is con
cerned there are more
severely-injured dogs
like Hope that are still
out there. Corley said
finding out who injured
the dog is a "priority,"
noting that his depart
ment has made past
cases against persons
who have harmed dogs.
Corley encourages anyone
who sees a dog that looks
injured or malnourished
to contact police.
Inv. Baxter James of the
Monroe County Sheriffs
Office, who also filed a
report about the incident,
said, "If we can identify
who did this, I'll take out
a warrant and lock them
up."
A Facebook page called

Sign of times: County tax sale is Aug. 2
BY WILL DAVIS
In a sign of the reces
sion, for the second time
this year, Monroe County
is getting ready to auc
tion off properties with
unpaid taxes.
The county this month
is advertising in the
Reporter 89 tracts that it
plans to sell on the court
house steps on Aug. 2 if
property owners don't
cough up overdue tax
payments.
"It's not something I
want to do," said tax com
missioner Lori Andrews.
"But everybody's scream
ing, 'where's my money?'."
The county held another
tax sale in April, but
most property owners
paid up before the auc
tion. The biggest property
owner scheduled for that
auction, Rialto Capital,
paid its $357,000 tax bill
on property in the Riata
subdivision just before
the sale. Andrews said
the county wound up auc
tioning just six parcels on
the courthouse steps,
transactions which netted
$26,917 for the county.
So how does Andrews
decide which delinquent
properties go to auction?
First of all, she said she
only takes to auction
properties that are more
than a year delinquent.
For instance, someone
who hasn't paid 2010
taxes would have a grace
period.
And property owners
who have contacted
Andrews' office and set
up a payment plan will
also be shown more
patience.
Andrews said buyers
can get some good deals
at tax sales. In April, a
30-acre tract sold for
$25,000, less than $1,000
per acre.
But unlike foreclosures,
buyers must wait a year
before taking possession
of the property. Once the
county gets its money for
unpaid taxes, any excess
funds can be reclaimed by
the property owner.
Andrews said they had
a good crowd at the April
sale, including folks like
retired railroad executive
John Ambrose, retired
Nabisco executive James
Green, truck company
manager Clete Sanders,
retired principal Mike
Hickman, real estate
investor Doris Ogletree,
as well as a Florida land
investor Earl Lyons.
The tax sale will begin
at 9 a.m. on Aug. 2.

Movie
continued from front
blown away by the amazing response from the com
munity of Cedartown, one of the locations where film
ing took place prior to coming to High Falls. Dunn
said the large turnout of supporters caused filming to
slow down and get off schedule. Because of the need to
get back on track, the crew limited access to the set
once they got to High Falls.
Dunn said she personally thanked Thornton for
bringing the movie to High Falls and drumming up
positive attention for the area. She said he told her
that they chose High Falls because it was a pictur
esque, remote spot that is not very accessible.
Dunn said she was impressed by how well-organized
the filmmakers were, saying they had such summer
essentials as water trucks and fans.
Dunn said the group filmed several scenes, including
one with Duvall that involved gunfire. She said
Duvall and another acting star, Kevin Bacon, descend
ed into the river for another scene as well.
Dunn said in about a month she plans to open the
Riverwood Folk Museum as part of her shop, which
will chronicle some of the history of the High Falls
area. She said she welcomes any items or memories
that locals might want to contribute for the museum.
It is unknown whether the crew has any intention of
returning to High Falls for additional filming, but
Dunn said she doubts it since no crew member made
mention of a future return.
