GAME PICKS OF THE WEEK
Reporter editor Will Davis, along with news editor Richard Dumas, are match
ing wits and football savvy with Karen Harbuck, David Sperau, Greg Head,
Fletcher Johnson and Carl Whitaker in the annual “Games of the Week” competi
tion. Each week, these individuals will pick high school, college and NFL football
games to see who will have the best record at the end of the season. The winner
this week is Marvin White, who tied seven others by going 9-1 but took the
tiebreaker by predicting a 26-17 UGA win over Tennessee. White wins a T-shirt
and $20 cash. Among our celebrity pickers, leader Carl Whitaker had a rough
week (for him) going 7-3, putting close followers within four games of Whitaker.
Enjoy your week of football!

Lady Dogs
continued from page IB
drew a two-out walk, and then Adair
Woodward doubled off the fence to score
Walls. Then, MP’s left-handed hitting
junior Robbi Grier came up with the
Lady Dogs' biggest hit of the season,
blasting a two-run homer over the right-
field wall to give MP a 5-4 lead. The
Lady Dogs were able to hold the lead in
the bottom of the seventh inning, secur
ing a most unlikely victory.
The homer was one of two hits for Grier
in the game. Grier now holds the single
season MP home run record with four
this year.
The victory gave MP, now 20-12, its
fourth consecutive 20-win season.
The win over Veterans came immediate
ly after MP thumped Howard 10-1 to lock
up a state playoff appearance.
Seniors Kaylee Chitwood, Amber Moore
and Woodward each had a pair of hits in
the victory over Howard.
The Lady Bulldogs impressive march
through the region tournament, which
was held in Dublin, came to an abrupt
halt Thursday, when host West Laurens
pounded MP 9-0.
The defeat came just two days after
West Laurens had initially put MP in the
losers bracket. The Lady Dogs lost 7-6 to
eventual champion West Laurens in the
bottom of the seventh inning.
Despite the loss, MP got to celebrate a
little bit when senior Taylor Penn got the
100th hit of her career. Senior Kaylan
Sims and juniors Grier, Katie Rowland
and Laura Darden joined Penn with two
hits each in the game. Penn leads the
Lady Dogs with a .566 average and 30
RBIs in her final season.
Penn even homered earlier in the day
during MP's opening game of the tourna
ment, a 12-6 win over Rutland. In that
game, Rowland went a terrific 4 for 4 and
broke the school record for doubles in a
season with 12.
MP head coach Ronnie Shipman said he
is proud of the way his team continued to
compete during a season that had some
bumps in the road at midseason.
He said, "I have never had a team that
had so many two-out comebacks."
Shipman attributed MP's excellent late-
season play to the players realizing the
importance of the tournament games.
"My players know that is when it mat
ters," Shipman said. "They were ready
and confident. We need to play that way
the rest of the season."
As the third seed from Region 2-AAA,
the Lady Bulldogs will square off with
the second seed from Region 1-AAA,
Worth County. The Lady Rams will host
the Lady Dogs in Sylvester at 3:30 p.m.
on Wednesday in a best-of-three series.
Game 2 will take place at 5:30 p.m. on
Wednesday. If a third game is necessary,
it will be played in Sylvester on
Thursday. Shipman said a game time for
Game 3 has not been set, but he antici
pates it will be a night time start.
Worth County is 21-11 on the season.
The Lady Rams narrowly lost the Region
1-AAA championship game to Crisp
County 3-2 in 8 innings. Shipman said
Region 1-AAA is not known as a powerful
softball region and said while the Lady
Rams are good, they are beatable.
Shipman said Worth County is led by
star catcher Haley Ellis. Ellis's sister
Heather is the team's starting shortstop
and is also a very good player, according
to Shipman.
As a team, MP set the record for most
home runs in a season with 11.
Curiously, the Lady Dogs did not hit a
home run at home this year. Shipman
said that is due to MP's long 210-foot
field. He said Worth County's field is only
190 feet, so he hopes MP can take advan
tage of the short porch.
If the Lady Dogs advance to the second
round, they will face the winner of the
three-game series between Region 3-AAA
champion Cross Creek and the fourth
seed from Region 4-AAA Jackson. If
Cross Creek wins, MP would travel to
Augusta. If Jackson wins, MP would host
in the second round.
MP will likely be without the services of
one of its assistant coaches, Marcy
Sanders, during its playoff run. Sanders'
daughter Katie has been in Egleston
Children's Hospital in Atlanta for nearly
a week after she was struck ill with a
brain tumor.
Shipman said the Sanders family is in
the team's thoughts and prayers as the
season continues.
