Monroe County commissioners approved
an across-the-board 6-percent pay raise for
the command staff at the sheriffs office
last Tuesday.
Sheriff John Cary Bittick said his top
staff has missed out on regular merit rais
es given to most county employees over
the past five years because they're not on
the merit system. Since county merit
employees got 3-percent raises on June 1,
the command staff raises are retroactive to
June 1 as well. That means the command
staff will get an additional check this
Friday for the underpayments since June.
Bittick said the sheriffs office already
had money in the budget to cover the rais
es but he wanted to get board approval.
The raises will cost about $33,000 per
year. Commissioners approved the raises
4-0, with commissioner Larry Evans abstaining. The sheriff, who makes $88,000 per
year, will not be affected because his pay is set by the state. The raises are above at right.

BY RICHARD DUMAS
A Macon probation officer
was arrested and charged
with DUI after he was
stopped in Monroe County
on the way home from a
pre-wedding celebration in
Atlanta on Sept. 30.
Tylan Jakai Gatling, 29,
of Macon, was charged with
driving in the emergency
lane.
According to the incident
report, at about 4:20 a.m.,
Sgt. Randy Grindstaff
received a lookout for a
white Toyota Camry on I-
75 South. A 9-1-1 caller
reported the car was trav
eling recklessly all over
the interstate lanes.
Grindstaff stopped the car
and smelled a strong odor
of alcohol coming from the
male driver, later identi
fied as Gatling.
Gatling's eyes were
bloodshot, and he was
very unsteady on his feet.
His speech was slurred
making it difficult for
Grindstaff to understand
him. Grindstaff asked him
for his driver's license.
After dropping several
credit cards on the
ground, Gatling handed
Grindstaff an ID card that
indicated he was a
Georgia probation officer.
He then handed him his
driver's license.
Gatling told Grindstaff
he was coming from a cel
ebration in Atlanta
because he was getting
married the next day.
Gatling said he was a field
officer in the Macon proba
tion office and asked if
Grindstaff could help him
out. Gatling admitted he
had been drinking and said
he had last consumed alco
hol an hour prior. He then
failed several field sobriety
tests. When Gatling failed
to properly recite the alpha
bet, he admitted he had
consumed too much alcohol.
The car's front seat pas
senger was also extremely
intoxicated. The driver said
many times that the pas
senger was the best man in
his upcoming wedding.
Once at the Monroe
County Jail, Gatling tested
twice the legal limit.

Hi Moms and Dads,
° r Our TToojp|l
Halloween is coming and with it lots of candy! Once again we will buy back candy from your kids. Let them
have a few treats and stash a few away, but we will take the rest and pay them for it! The candy will be shipped
overseas to our courageous soldiers serving our country. In return we will give your kids $1.00 per pound of
donated candy and a Firefly flashing toothbrush along with other prizes. This Cash for Candy Program is a
great way to teach your child charity and show support for out troops. It will be much easier to donate the
candy if they know it will cheer up our brave men and women. We will be providing a card for your child to sign
and it will be sent along with the candy. Kids should still dress up, go out, have fun, and yes even eat some
candy. Let them pick out their favorites and then share the rest. Bring your children and their wrapped candy
to our office Tuesday, November 1,2011 between 3:00-6:00 p.m. and help us spread the word about Cash for
Candy in support of our troops.
Sincerely,
J)t. Cl&ll H. MothS
