Monroe County 4-H horse team competes
On Saturday, May 5, the
Monroe County 4-H Horse Team
traveled to Athens to compete in
the Horse Judging Contest. The
Monroe County Team consists of
Senior 4-H Members: Ali Goode
and Sydney Zellner, Junior 4-H
members: Kayleigh Bush,
Heather Starr and Julie Bush,
and Coaches: Kathy Ivey and
Janet Hencely.
The Juniors did an excellent job
with the team of three placing
10th out of 21 teams. A team
must have 3 members to be con
sidered for team placing. The
Seniors competed individually
and both did well.
The Monroe County 4-H Staff is
extremely proud of these hard
working 4-H member because
they have been practicing and
studying hard for months to com
pete at this contest. They studied
from several Horse Industry
books and must be prepared for
the unknown as well for they do
not know until they are there
which classes of horses they will
be given for reasons. They all
judge eight classes of four horses
each and Juniors give reasons on
two classes while Seniors give
reason on four classes.
It is a difficult job to judge all
these different types of horses
but Monroe County 4-H Horse
team has become very good at
this under Kathy Ivey and Janet
Hencely's instruction.
Horse Judging is a contest that
helps the participants:
* Acquire a better knowledge of
horses and develop skills in the
selection of horses, while learn
ing the basic principles of animal
science.
* Learn to identify breeds of
horses, evaluate conformation
and performance.
* Learn how to make individual
decisions and support them with
oral statements, which develops
skills of decision making, critical
thinking, and problem solving.
* Develop leadership abilities,
build character and assume citi
zenship responsibilities, and
develop skills, knowledge and
attitudes for lifelong use.
Monroe County 4-H staff appre
