Honoring our vets,

Culloden
re-elects
Mayor Eller
BY WILL DAVIS
Culloden voters re-elected mayor Steve
Eller to a ninth term by a 73-22 margin
over challenger Emmett Brice last
Tuesday Nov. 6.
"I'm not if sure it's congratulations or
condolences," joked Eller, talking about
the perils of public service in a town
with about 300 resi
dents. Culloden's
mayor serves two-
year terms.
Meanwhile, Sara
Jean Ray was elected
to council without
opposition, filling the
seat of retiring coun
cil member Louise
Brice, whose hus
band was running
for mayor.
The biggest thing
going in Culloden right now, said Eller,
is that they're trying to put in a new
water system.
Besides that, said Eller, he spends
much of his time trying to answer citi
zens’ problems and complaints. For
instance, some Culloden residents com
plained that they saw city workers
parked at the local convenience store for
two hours rather than working. Eller
said the city worker in question gets a
15-minute break in the morning and
then goes back to the store for lunch two
hours later, and some residents mistak
enly thought he had never gone back to
work.
Another complaint, said Eller, was that
city employees had been using the city
phone to call Texas. Eller ordered an
investigation and determined someone
faxed something to Texas at a cost of 30
cents.
"Sometimes you have some very minor,
petty things," said Eller. But Eller said
he tries to answer those complaints and
make sure Culloden is the best it can be.
"My idea to make Culloden a kinder,
nicer place," said Eller.
One of the city's biggest jobs, said
Eller, is maintaining the city's four
cemeteries.
The Culloden mayor and council meet
the second Tuesday of each month at
5:30 p.m. at Culloden City Hall.

Wreck in Hwy. 41
work zone injures 3
BY WILL DAVIS
Three Barnesville residents
were hospitalized in an auto
accident on Thursday in the
construction zone on Hwy. 41
just outside of Forsyth.
A Juliette driver, 19-year-old
Jessica Morgan of Luther Smith
Road, was cited for following too
closely after driving a 2004 Ford
Explorer Trac into the back of a
car that had stopped for the
construction work.
Morgan told sheriffs deputies
she thought the car in front of
her was moving and that she
wasn't able to stop in time. But
deputy Richard Coughenhour of
the Monroe County Sheriffs
Office noted in his report that
there were construction barrels,
signs and DOT personnel direct
ing traffic. Morgan slammed
into the rear of a 1997 Ford
Taurus driven by Cequiria
Warner of Barnesville, sending
it into the rear of a third car, a
2007 Pontiac Vibe driven by
Karen Kern of Thomaston.
Warner and her front seat
passenger, Janeen Wilcox, both
had to be extricated by Monroe
County and Forsyth firefighters.
Along with back-seat passenger
Courtney Fish of Barnesville,
all three were taken by ambu
lance to local hospitals. They
were treated and released. No
other injuries were reported.
Warner was also cited for driv
ing without a license.
Traffic was backed up for more
than hour as workers cleared
the wreck. The DOT was sched
uled to finish adding an inter
mittent passing lane and bike
lane to Hwy. 41 between
Forsyth and Barnesville in
December. But DOT officials
say the project has been slowed
by the discovery of a city water
line in the construction zone
that needs moving.
Jessica Morgan of Juliette chokes back tears on Thursday while watching Monroe
County EMTs fasten Janeen Wilcox of Barnesville to a backboard. Morgan struck
the vehicle in which Wilcox was a passenger while it was stopped for the Hwy. 41
construction project. Wilcox was treated and released from Monroe County Hos
pital. Morgan was cited for following too closely. (Photo/Will Davis)
