Dear Friend of the American Cancer Society,
During the special holiday season we are reminded of how fortunate we are to be able
to help others in our community. “Love Lights a Tree” is a special opportunity to
purchase a symbolic Christmas tree ornament in honor or in memory of a family
member, friend, employee, teacher or loved one who has been touched by the
dreadful disease of cancer. The beautiful tree in the Monroe County Hospital will be
decorated with lovely personalized ornaments and lit in remembrance of these loved
ones who have fought the cancer battle.
Please see the attached form that can be used to purchase a gift to honor that
special person. An acknowledgement card will be sent to the person or family
immediately upon receiving your donation. If you would like, you can purchase a love
lights personalized ornament for a donation of $10 and it can be picked up after the
Love Lights a Tree Ceremony on Sunday, December 2nd, at 2 pm in the Monroe
County Hospital lobby.
This year, we would like to invite all of our Monroe County cancer survivors to attend
the Love Lights a Tree Ceremony on Sunday, December 2nd so we can recognize and
honor their survivorship. What better way to celebrate the holidays than surrounded
by our survivors!
Learning
responsibilities
of citizenship
The 4th grade classes at k.B. Sutton Elemen
tary had their own presidential election on
Tuesday, Nov. 6 (voting day). Students held
discussions prior to votingj about rights as an
American citizen, veterans, and facts -vs-
opinions. Each student was given his or her
own voter ID card, completed it, and turned it
in to cast the ballot. All of the 4th graders
wrote about changes they would make if
elected president. Photos by Diana Haire.

Civil War era comes
to life at KB Sutton
Elizabeth Colley & Nate Hardin came to Mrs.
Jenkins' 5th grade class dressed up as a Southern
Bell & a Union soldier from the Civil War in order to
bring history back to life for students at K.B. Sutton
Elementary. These guests brought authentic materi
als, such as the fife, breast plate, replicas of haver
sacks, cartridge boxes/belts, pistol holster, sack coat
& forge cap, that were used during this war.
Nate played the fife for the students just as a Union
soldier would have played to awake the soldiers in
1862 before going to battle. Elizabeth discussed what
life was life for a Southern lady. One interesting fact
that students found unbelievable was that exposed
ankles was a cause of marriage and divorce.
Learning from Elizabeth and Nate built students’
background knowledge about this time in America’s
history and awakened a desire to learn more about
the Civil War’s major battles and the lasting conse
quences of this war fought in Monroe County and the
nearby area.
Sutton Knights celebrate homecoming
Students from KB Sutton displayed their Sutton pride in the Mary Persons High School homecoming parade in various ways
—riding bikes, walking, and taking a leisurely ride with community business partner Chris Parker in the Youmans Chevrolet
truck. Even MPHS Mascot "Sampson" joined the ride with principal Alicia Elder and students from KBS. Photos by Diana
