BY DIANE GLIDEWELL
Not long after the sun rose in Forsyth
on Oct. 1, some members of the Mary
Persons High School Class of 1957 and
their husbands and wives boarded a bus
to retrace their senior trip to
Washington, D.C. and New York City.
They left with a sense of adventure and
camaraderie and returned late on Oct. 9
with a sense of a trip as fun and satisfy
ing as anticipated.
"It was a grand trip," said class mem
ber Rosanne Oxford Tyner. "I was so glad
we got to go. The Lord just blessed us."
In addition to the planned sites they
visited, they were able to take a side trip
as they were leaving New York to where
Flight 93 came down in Pennsylvania on
Sept. 11, 2001. The Class of 1957 tour
group had already seen the empty spaces
in New York City where the Twin Towers
had stood and had visited the Pentagon
in Washington, D.C., which was also
attacked on that date. Tyner said their
trip to the site where Flight 93 crashed
was on a dreary, wet day, making it even
more impactful.
Conversely, most of the tour was on a
joyful note, with the group periodically
filling the tour bus with song. Tyner said
the bus driver, William Partridge, had
declared them by far the best group he
had ever driven for or traveled with.
Tour guides were Sue Wood and
Charlotte Spear.
