people in Monroe County

The service center for
merly known as Atkinson’s
Service Center has deep
roots in Monroe County.
Jimmy Atkinson graduat
ed from Mary Persons
High School in 1979 and
opened the body shop with
his brother, Johnny, in
1991. Jimmy, a mechanic,
soon expanded the busi
ness to include auto repair
and added a towing service
a few years later. The cen
ter’s current location was
developed in 1999.
Stephens has worked with
the business since 2000,
and Gonzalez has been
part of the team for sever
al years. Grant, whose
grandfather had a shop in
Monroe County, worked
with Atkinson’s before

last seven years. Grant
says he is happy to be able
to help the community.
"We are excited about
rebranding but continuing
business as usual and
adding new services for
the community," said
Hicks.
The business is expand
ing to service the tractor-
trailer fleet for Trading
Post and will be available
to service those same
needs in the public sector.
Expansion will be complet
ed within the next six
months. Trading Post is
now affiliated with a fleet
of 109 moving and storage
trucks that provide service
nationwide. Forsyth is a
home-base for this opera
tion with additional bases
in Augusta, Macon,
Columbus, and
Enterprise, Ala.

Love lights a tree: Fun for the cause

Love Lights A Tree is an
annual event of the
American Cancer Society
that is locally sponsored
by the Monroe County
Leadership Council and
Monroe County Hospital.
The purpose of this annual
Christmas event is to
honor those who are can
cer survivors and to honor
the memory of those who
have lost their cancer bat
tle. The Monroe County
Hospital Auxiliary each
year decorates a beautiful
tree in the lobby of the
hospital. For a gift of $10,
a personalized ornament
will be put on the tree to
honor your friend or loved
one who has been affected
by cancer. This year the
Love Lights a Tree ceremo
ny will be held at Monroe
County Hospital at 2 p.m.
on Sunday, Dec. 2.
Each year Love Lights a
Tree features entertain
ment by several local tal
ents, recognizing cancer
survivors and loved ones
lost. Featured singers this
year will be Ted Keen of
Ebenezer Methodist
Church and the Angels, a
group of young singers
from Mt. Gilead Baptist
Church. Katie Sanders, a
cancer survivor, will per
form on the keyboard.
Special recognition will be
given children who are
cancer survivors. After
the program a time of fel
lowship and refreshments
will be held in the hospital
cafeteria.

Walmart donates $1,000
to After School Program

Nov. 8. The money will be used to help fund CICMC’s
After School Tutoring Program. CICMC director An
nette Lucear (second from left) said Walmart’s assis
tance will help pay for the 15 children in the program.
Settoon said Walmart enjoys being able to help out
the local community. Lucear thanked Settoon for the
generous gift and said of the check: “It’s always great.
It’s touching the kids in the community.” Herbert
Gantt (right), vice president of the CICMC Board of
Directors, said the After School Tutoring Program has
been in existence for eight years and added that it is a
valuable program that should be continued. Registration for the after school program will be held Dec. 10-13 at the Elder
Manor Apartments rental office at 143 Powerhouse Road. Classes are scheduled to start on Monday, Jan. 7 and will be held
from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Head Start Building. For more information about the program, contact
