On the Outside Looking In
Christmas early, lawyered up
By DONALD
JACKSON DANIEL
W fell, here it is,
Thanksgiving
Eve and I am
amazed at the
malls, busi
nesses and even the City of
Forsyth having put up
Christmas decorations before
the left-over turkey has been
cooked and gotten cold. And,
almost a week before
Thanksgiving (when I am
writing this column) “Black
Friday’ advertising has got
ten almost as obnoxious as
the political lambasting we
just went through. Some
merchants are attempting to
change Black Friday to Black
Thursday- - -Thanksgiving
Day.
I intend to “boy
cott” all stores
and businesses
which started
advertising their
come and get’ em
Christmas stuff
even before
Halloween. I
really can’t do
that or I will
run out of gro
ceries, gas, toi
let paper, etc. You get the
idea.
SINCE 1972,1 have
always been a shop at home-
-Forsyth and Monroe
County--promoter and
attempt to do it all the time.
Supporting local businesses
is my mantra. But, the other
day, I found a Monroe
Countian not working local
ly but the manager of a new
Macon restaurant, Buca at
River Crossing.
It was on a whim that I
walked across the street
from Barnes and Noble for
lunch at the Italian restau
rant and met Chaunce
Fulton, manager of Buca.
He, his wife and four chil
dren live just off Highway
42 North in Monroe County,
not far from Blount Road.
There were three other
Monroe County residents
enjoying a whopping helping
of really good Italian cuisine
that can be served family
style.
Since Forsyth-Monroe
County doesn’t have a
Italian restaurant, go down
and have a visit with
Chaunce. After all, he is a
Monroe Countian.
FROM Forsyth to
Bolingbroke, Norfolk
Southern Railway has left a
mess with a whole bunch of
rotting crossties littering the
side of the railroad.
Particularly on Railroad and
Indian Springs Drive in
Forsyth. Wonder why they
won’t clean up the piles of
rotting wood which have
been stagnant and rot
ting for almost a year.
Maybe the City of
Forsyth Godfathers
should issue a “clean
up” edict or “we won’t
let your train come
through Forsyth”. Good
idea, I think.
THE RECENTLY
elected chairman of
the Monroe County
Commission and instigator
of moving the Monroe/Bibb
County line when he was
just a humble district com
missioner is getting press
coverage stating “tired of
throwing money at the case”
as reported in the news.
Since his second cousin
has now been paid by Bibb
County for his surveying
work, guess it is “quitting”
time. Maybe he will insti
gate quit throwing good
money into bad. Hey, maybe
the defeated MCC
Chairman will take up the
sword and be paid as much
as we have paid the “silk
stocking” Atlanta law firm.
LAWYERED UP is the
best way to describe how
our county commissioners
have paid out our money for
one Atlanta law firm, the
county attorney and a for
mer county attorney. The
present county attorney
Mike Dillon has been paid
$96,502.02 so far this year,
former county attorney
Franklin Freeman has
received checks totaling
$5,850, with Atlanta law
firm of King and Spalding
getting the largest taxpayer
checks, $197,885.17. All this
lawyering up on behalf of
the commissioners and us
totals $300,237.89 or
$30,023.97 per month for
the first ten months of this
year. We’ve got two more
months of potential lawery-
ing up.
INFLATION: Very inter
esting that the county attor
ney back in 1976, Charles B.
Haygood Jr., was paid over
$41,000 for his services and
the present county attorney
has been paid—-see above.
PARKING for county
employees and visitors to
the commission office is also
expensive. According to the
checks paid out to Trio
Manufacturing, $5,000 has
been paid for making it
“convenient” for county
employees and visitor park
ing adjacent and across the
street from the county
administration office.
But, yet, the City of
Forsyth parking lot, a block
and-a-half away, sits empty
and the courthouse square
parking is mostly unavail
able on many days. Another
one of those I Just Don’t
Understand.
“THE speed limit of 17
mph is in the Monroe
County Recreation
Complex” according to
Samantha (Sam) Bussell
and she is correct and wins
a “I Answered The
Question” t-shirt, certificate
for a fried green tomato
appetizer from the Whistle
Stop, cookie from Jonah’s,
Blizzard at Dairy Queen
Office
continued from the front
ond was for four 50-inch
high definition TVs and the
third was for one projector
and two drop down screens.
The costs of the three
options including installa
tion, cabling and mounting
hardware were $6,193,
$9,075 and $11,252, respec
tively.
Commissioners unani
mously approved the most
expensive of the three pro
posals, so that both commis
sioners and the public could
be able to view screens at
the same time.
Commissioners’ current
meeting room is often
decried for its lack of room
for the public. The new room
will seat at least 100, have
15 foot ceilings and three
large picture windows, will
include a dais raised seven
inches off the ground where
commissioners will sit and a
room in the rear for closed
door sessions.
Also last Tuesday, commis
sioners voted 4-1 to add
$2,257 worth of electrical
wiring in the break room of
the new building to accom
modate a stove and an oven.
Commissioners may use the
new building's lobby to host
community events and
therefore wanted to have a
full kitchen on-site if neces
sary. The price does not
include the cost of the appli
ances.
Commissioner Jim Ham
opposed the measure.
Lastly, commissioners
approved CCTV security
cameras for the new build
ing at a cost of $5,483.
Commissioner Larry Evans
said he was in favor of the
cameras, noting that cam
eras at the newly-renovated
Monroe County courthouse
have "paid for themselves
already."
and a hot dog combo from
the Hot Dawg House.
Here’s the question for the
week: what bird was consid
ered as the national emblem
other than the eagle? First
correct answer after twelve
noon on Thursday wins the
certificate and t-shirt.
YES I have purchased
some Twinkies and thinking
about them being stocking
stuffers for my great, great,
grandchildren. They will
still be edible in thirty or
forty years.
