New county insurance may limit options
PAGE 7A
Monroe County employees may
have more limited options for their
primary care doctor in Forsyth next
year after commissioners on Nov. 8
moved the county's medical insur
ance from the Blue Cross Blue
Shield Preferred Provider
Organization (PPO) to the Blue
Cross Blue Shield Point of Service
(POS) plan for 2013.
The county's insurance consulting
firm, ShawHankins, Inc., recom
mended the change at a called meet
ing on Oct. 31.
Overall, county insurance costs are
expected to increase by 1 percent
with the change but will be less
than if the county had continued
with the PPO plan used in 2012.
Initially, commissioners were con
cerned about making the switch
because they feared that there were
not any Monroe County doctors in
the Blue Cross Blue Shield POS net
work. However, they later deter
mined that the Taunton medical
practice is, in fact, a member of the
POS system. Commissioner Larry
Evans said if any other local doctors'
offices want to join the POS system,
they could do so at their discretion.
Perry
continued from the front
in 1975, and Rogers not
long after that.
"Our families have grown
up with each others'," said
Perry. "It's like we're all
family. I will miss working
with them on a daily
basis."
Perry moved to Forsyth
from his native Dublin in
1975 without knowing
anyone. He has been the
county's only optometric
office for most of the years
since. Perry said he never
took a week's vacation,
only taking time off for
health reasons or to play
in a tennis tournament. A
graduate of Auburn
University and the
Southern College of
Optometry in Memphis,
he's been active in Monroe
County as a recreation
baseball, football and bas
ketball coach. He and his
wife Libby raised their
sons Matt and Mitchell.
Perry said he's tried over
the last couple of years to
find a way to keep his
office open full-time and
offer more hours and serv
ices.
"Unfortunately I was
unsuccessful," said Perry.
Then in October, Perry
was notified of the oppor
tunity at Walmart and it
just felt right to take it.
A tournament-winning
tennis player, Perry said
if his health stays good
he hopes to work there
several years.
"I think I’d go crazy with
full retirement," joked
Perry.
Perry will be providing
eye exams only at
Walmart with new equip
ment, and said the prices
on contact lenses and
glasses there are good. The
Vision Center will be open
at least six days per week.
Perry said any prescrip
tions he writes can be
filled at any optical estab
lishment, and that he will
be accepting Optum
Health (Spectera) vision
insurance and several oth
ers.
"I hope many of my
patients here will main
tain our relationship by
seeing me in Macon," said
Perry.
Anyone needing vision
records should call Perry's
office at 994-2988. Anyone
who will continue with
Perry at Walmart should
let them know so Perry
can hold their records. He
said he'll work 3-4 days
per week at the Vision
Center and can be reached
in January at 754-2240.

New Blood Thinner Medicines
Anticoagulants, a drug group known as “blood thinners,”
help prevent the formation of blood clots. Blood clots can
prevent blood flow and therefore limit oxygen supply to tissues
and organs. Clots most commonly occur in the legs (deep vein
thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism). Other serious
medical conditions that can arise from lack of oxygen due to
blood clotting include heart attacks and strokes. Some condi
tions may put a person at risk for developing blood clots such
as obesity, genetic factors, smoking, and immobility. Irregular
heart rhythms and surgery may also promote blood clots, and
these individuals may be placed on special medications to
reduce their risk.
Until recently, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) was the
only oral anticoagulant available. This blood thinner blocks
vitamin K, which is necessary to make the substances that
cause clotting. Warfarin requires frequent laboratory tests to
make sure the blood doesn’t get too thin. Dabigatran (Pradaxa)
and rivaroxaban (Xarelto) are a new type of oral blood thinners
that block different factors for clotting, and help prevent clots
and reduce the risk of stroke. Although frequent laboratory
tests aren’t required, these drugs still have the potential to
make blood too thin and cause other side effects.
