Red
Ribbon
week
BY SULLI GILES
From a student’s perspec
tive, Red Ribbon Week
means one thing, out do
all your friends. Hardly
any of us has ever sat
back and thought, what is
Red Ribbon Week really
for? What’s the story
behind it? The story really
is a tragic one. In the
month of February 1985,
Enrique "Kiki" Camarena
was kidnapped and tor
tured to death. He had
been working as an under
cover agent in Mexico
investigating a drug car
tel. Within a few weeks of
his heartbreaking death,
Enrique’s friends created a
club called Camarena
Clubs in Imperial Valley,
California. Pretty soon,
hundreds of people were
already pledging to live a
drug free life to admire
the sacrifices men and
women like Enrique make
every day. Thus, Red
Ribbon Week was born.
Red Ribbon Week was
celebrated at Monroe
County Middle School
Banks Stephens Campus
the week of Oct. 20-28.On
Monday, Oct. 20th, stu
dents at Monroe County
Middle School signed a
giant banner at lunch
pledging to be drug free.
Tuesday nearly every stu
dent wore the craziest
they owned, from layered
neon colored socks to long
knee socks this day was by
far my favorite. On
Wednesday the hallways
were filled with heads cov
ered with snapbacks, base
ball caps, sun visors, and
hats that displayed the
students’ crazy personali
ties. Thursday, to me at
least, was a very dark day
because we wore our sun
glasses and half the stu
dents ended up taking
their glasses off; so, they
could see what was being
written on the board. On
Friday, the girls broke out
their red skinny jeans and
the boys wore their
favorite red t-shirts to fin
ish off Red Ribbon Week
with a bang!
Book Fair
BY NASHAYLA
STOKES
By: Nashayla Stokes
Recently, the Bank
Stephens campus of
Monroe County Middle
School had a Scholastic’s
Book Fair. All the money
raised from the book fair
goes to helping the school
library purchase books. It
also helps buy textbooks
and supplies for teachers
and for their classrooms.
As a school, we raised
about $500. Not only did
the book fair provide a
means to assist Monroe
County Middle School
purchase books that we
students need, it also was
a fun experience for stu
dents. We were able to
browse many books,
posters, and miscella
neous items. I would say
the book fair was a huge
success.
Mrs. Pierson

At the Bank Stephens
campus of Monroe County
Middle School, we have an
amazing media specialist
named Mrs. Pierson. Mrs.
Pierson has many hobbies
and interest.
One of Mrs. Pierson’s
hobbies is reading. She
also enjoys decorating, and
she loves shopping with
her granddaughter Kayla

As many voters went to
the polls on Nov. 6, several
Monroe County Middle
School 4-H students went
to the Cotton Bowl and
Consumer Judging
Competition. This event
was held in Perry at the
Georgia National
Fairgrounds.
4-H students judged the
following consumer items:
movie rentals, fast food,
watches, and one cotton
item that we all know
well, jeans.
Sixth, seventh, and
eighth graders attended.
Those students were as
follows: Laurel Sparks,
Addie Sparks, Russell
Lynch, Madeline
Copeland, Courtney
Copeland, Tyler Evans,
and Kayla Pierson.
I am a 7th grader at
Monroe County Middle
School at the Banks
Stephens campus. My
name is Savannah
Zawacki. I have one Pre-
Advanced Placement class,
which is social studies. I
have never had a Pre AP
class before; so, I did not
know what to expect this
school year. I thought Pre
AP classes would be very
easy, but they are not.
This class is very challeng
ing.
My life is really busy. I
take piano lessons on
Campus). Mrs. Pierson
also enjoys spending time
with her other family
members.
Mrs. Pierson likes to
know about Monroe
County and the events
happening in it. She is
interested in public educa
tion, and she takes pride
in watching students suc
ceed.
Mrs. Pierson enjoys
working in the library.
When she was in high
school, she started out
working in a public
library. She never thought
him. Plus, he explains
everything really well that
allows me to envision how
it looks or what it’s like.
Mr. Ridley is an awesome
teacher. He is really nice.
If you are failing his class,
he helps you out in any
way that he can. If you are
having a bad day or you’re
not doing so well, Mr.
Ridley will cheer you up.
4-Her’s did a great job
overall. We couldn’t have
such a great group with
out support from Ms.
Sandra Linkous (volun
teer), Ms. Abbie Bunn
(Program Assistant), and
Ms. Jenny Brown (County
Extension Agent). All 4-H
participants from Monroe
County Middle School
would like to give Ms.
Sandra Linkous special
thanks. She taught us how
to find the best bang for
your buck.
Ms. Abbie Bunn and Ms.
Jenny Brown helped by
providing transportation
and the materials needed
to learn. The 4-H students
that went to the Cotton
Bowl left with the inten
tion of returning next year
for another unique experi
ence.
Monday, and I have cheer-
dawg practice on
Tuesdays. I have basket
ball games every Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday.
The only day that I get
free in the week would be
Thursday. It is a lot to
handle, but I’m taking it
like a champ. I actually
like being active like this.
I try really hard to make
time for my friends on the
weekend, when I’m not
busy. So, to say my life as
a seventh grader is busy,
fun, and takes lots of
patience would sum up my
life. It may be busy, but I
love it.
that she would be working
at a library again, but that
soon changed. Mrs.
Pierson answered her call
ing as a media specialist.
Over the years, Mrs.
Pierson has offered her
knowledge to many stu
dents and teachers; she
has taught them all the
many doors the media cen
ter can open. The Banks
Stephens campus of
Monroe County Middle
School is very fortunate to
have Mrs. Pierson as their
media specialist.
These are some of the rea
sons I wanted to spotlight
Mr. Ridley as my favorite
teacher. Even though all of
my teachers are great, I
had to recognize Mr.
Ridley. You should think
about who your favorite
teacher is during this
Thanksgiving season, and
take the time to thank
them in some special way.
Grade 8
Writing Test
BY KATHRYN
ELIZABETH CLANCE
On Jan. 23, all Monroe
County Middle School
eighth graders will be tak
ing the Grade 8 Writing
Assessment. There are
several tips that students
should remember while
preparing for the test.
My first piece of advice
would be to listen to your
teachers when they are
teaching about writing.
Your teachers will help you
to stay focused and under
stand what is expected
when you take the Grade 8
Writing Assessment.
When taking the assess
ment, the writer should
stay on topic. Read the
given topic carefully; so,
you will know if you are
writing in the persuasive
(writing to convince) or
expository (writing to
explain or tell) mode. A
writer should take his or
her time when prewriting,
but be mindful that this is
this assessment is timed.
If you get nervous, count
to 10, breathe, and make
yourself as comfortable as
possible.
This test should not be
hard. All you have to do is
read the reading prompt,
make a graphic organizer
over your topic, write your
rough draft, revise your
rough draft, edit your
rough draft, and write
your final draft in blue or
black ink. Are you ready?
If not, then I suggest that
you get to work on practic
ing. Practice makes perfect
is what I am always told.
Good luck eighth graders!
Right now is the time to
prepare! Remember, Jan.
23 is just around the cor
ner.
Stay updated!

Anti - Bullying week
BY CHIKINA BRANTLEY
Monroe County Middle School comes together to stop
bullying. Recently MCMS celebrated anti-bullying
week. On Monday we watched a video about bullying.
On Tuesday we wore purple and watched a video to say
‘no’ to bullying. OnWednesday we signed a pledge for no
bullying. On Thursday we made anti-bullying posters.
Friday, we put our name on a hand which represented
taking a stand and lending a hand to stop bullying.
Anti bullying week was a great success. If you see any
bully, please tell an adult because bullying will not be
tolerated. Always remember: Bullying is never cool.
