Around Monroe County
Monroe County groups honored by Relay
BY JIM BUFF
The Relay for Life of Monroe
County and the Monroe County
Leadership Council were present
ed the Survivor and Caregiver
Award at the 2012 Relay for Life
of South Georgia Conference in
October. The Survivor and
Caregiver award is given to one
county in Georgia by the
American Cancer Society who dis
plays outstanding survivor and
caregiver involvement. The Relay
for Life (RFL) Committee and
Leadership Council share this
award because the two groups
worked cohesively to honor our
local survivors in a multitude of
ways. The RFL Survivor
Committee chaired by Katie
Johnson, helped organize the
annual dinner in which survivors
are served a meal by volunteers
and have an evening of entertain
ment. At Relay for Life cancer
survivors are the guest of honor
and are recognized during a cele
bratory lap.
The work of the Monroe County
Leadership Council
entails a year-round
effort. . This effort is
through Road to
Recovery and Care

group of volunteers
who take cancer

This has been a very
active group for a
number of years.
When there has been
a shortage of drivers
for Road to Recovery,
Monroe County
Leadership Council
has provided the nec
