On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the fourth
and fifth grade students at
Samuel Hubbard Elementary
School were treated to a special
guest speaker, Alvin Jefferson.
Jefferson graduated from Mary
Persons High School in the Class
of 1993. He was a two-year letter-
man at Auburn University follow
ing two years on the Macon Junior
College basketball team.
Jefferson spoke to the Hubbard
students on the importance of aca
demics. He told them that academ
ic success is a critical key to being
successful in all areas of life.
Jefferson credited his mother
with pushing him to succeed in
school. He said he is grateful to
the Monroe County school system
for helping him succeed as a stu
dent and an athlete.
Jefferson shared his experiences
travelling to play professional bas
ketball in Mexico, Spain, France,
and Italy with the fourth and fifth
graders.. He told them how his
education helped him in his trav
els and gave him the ability to
communicate effectively in all
parts of the world.
After travelling the globe playing
basketball, Jefferson had opportu
nities to try out for NBA teams,
including the Toronto Raptors, the
Detroit Pistons, and the Atlanta
Hawks. He retired from profes
sional basketball after playing
with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Jefferson currently works for the
Georgia Department of
Corrections. He and his wife,
Kawanna, have two sons who
attend Hubbard Elementary
School.
Hubbard teacher takes early
learning lessons to Union Hill
Krista Moseley, right, gives tips on early learning at Forsyth’s
Union Hill Apartments.
BY SUSAN WOOD
On Oct.30, Hubbard
Elementary teacher, Ms.
Krista Mosley, met with
parents at Union Hill
Apartments in Forsyth to
share with them some
ideas about reading and
literacy.
Parents and students
who attended learned
many unique ways to use
ordinary objects and daily
activities, like shopping, to
begin learning about col
ors, numbers, etc. They
also saw ways to make
puppets and act out sto
ries to make reading fun
and interesting for any
age child.
One of the students in
attendance was a Pre-K
student at Hubbard
Elementary. Jay was
excited to be able to
answer questions about
the story, “Pete the Cat,”
that Ms. Mosley used for
part of her presentation.
This activity is part of a
new Community Outreach
program that that
Hubbard Elementary has
started. It is hoped the
program can grow from
two meetings for parents
per semester to more fre
quent meetings next year
and to other communities
in Hubbard’s district.

Technology brings student art to your fingertips
BY MISTI SIKES
Everyone is invited to
visit the Hubbard
Elementary
School Virtual
Art Museum to
view some of the
artwork that stu
dents have creat
ed in Ms. Briana
Dams’ art class
room.
Students in fourth and
fifth grades are the
artists of the
month for
November. They
reflected on the
pieces that they
designed. The fea
tured art for this
month included
beautiful self-portraits
that students made using
pastels.
The museum was
designed so family and
friends who do not live in
the local area would be
able to share the beautiful
art pieces created at
Hubbard Elementary
School. Visitors can view
the work and make posi
tive comments for our stu
dents. The website for our
