Why would anyone discredit an
outstanding young lady and
take away from her moment of
glory by posting such a nega

Honey Boo Boo, Greg
Head led write-in votes
Characters like
Greg Head of
Forsyth and Cat in
the Hat got write-in
votes in this year’s
election. Ironically,
at last Thursday’s
parade, they were
the same person.
BY RICHARD DUMAS
Big Bird, Fred Flintstone
and Mickey Mouse are
among those receiving
write-in votes for Monroe
County commission chair
man during last month's
election.
The Monroe
County
Elections office
released the
results of write-
in votes from
the Nov. 6 elec
tion, and local
voters were
found to have
made some
unusual selec
tions.
Most of the
write-in votes
were confined
to uncontested
races. For
example, the
contested
District 1 com
missioners'
race between
Larry Evans
and Donald
Smith yielded
only a single
write-in vote, which was
for Forsyth mayor John
Howard, and the commis
sion chairman race
between James Vaughn
and Mike Bilderback had
only 22 write-in selections.
On the other hand, the
uncontested race for
Towaliga Circuit District
Attorney, which was won
by Richard Milam, yielded
42 write-in votes and the
uncontested tax commis
sioner's race, won by Lori
Andrews, had 60 write-in
selections.
There were 21 write-in
votes for U.S. President,
including one vote for
Abraham Lincoln, two
votes for Herman Cain and
seven votes for Ron Paul,
as well as 18 total write-in
votes for the Public Service
Commissioner race.
The uncontested U.S.
House District 8 race, won
by Austin Scott, yielded 80
write-in votes, including
one vote each for Big Bird,
Daffy Duck, Honey Boo Boo
and Kermit the Frog, as
well as 14 votes for the dis
trict's former representa
tive Jim Marshall.
There were 72 write-in
votes for the uncontested
Georgia Senate District 18
race won by Cecil Staton,
including a vote for
University of Georgia line
backer Jarvis Jones.
In fact, current UGA
players were well-repre
sented in Monroe County
election write-ins. Malcolm
Mitchell received a vote for
Georgia House District
129, Todd Gurley
picked up a vote
for Monroe
County district
attorney, Aaron
Murray received a
vote for Monroe
County sheriff,
Keith Marshall
received one for
Monroe County
tax commissioner
and Alec Ogletree
picked up a vote
for the county's
chief magistrate
judge opening.
There were 76
write-in votes for
the uncontested
Monroe County
Superior Court
Clerk's race won
by Lynn Ham.
Some of those
votes were quite
unusual, including
one vote each for Elmer
Fudd, Han Solo, Jesus and
Ted Nugent. Mickey Mouse
was particularly popular in
the clerk's race, garnering
six write-in nods.
Republican presidential
nominee Mitt Romney even
got four votes in the clerk's
race.
The county's uncontested
sheriffs race, won by John
Cary Bittick, also had some
interesting write-in selec
tions. Among the county's
74 write-in choices were
Barney Fife, George
Washington, Honey Boo
Boo, John Wayne, Lee
Greenwood, Luke
Skywalker and Stewie
Griffin of "Family Guy"
fame.
Several local persons
received write-in votes in a
number of races. For exam
ple, heating and air man
Greg Head of Forsyth
received seven write-in
votes for county commis
sion chairman and four
votes for sheriff.
On a more serious note,
there were 492 total write-
in votes cast for Towaliga
Soil and Water
Conservation District rep
resentative. Eddie
Sheppard received the
most votes with 77. Barry
Peters received the second
highest number of write-in
votes with 32. However,
there were no certified
write-in candidates for the
position, rendering the
write-in choices ineligible
for office.
