Local men charged in armed
robbery at Forsyth Ramada Inn
1 \
Two Forsyth men were arrested and
charged with armed robbery last
week after they allegedly robbed two
males at a room at the Ramada Inn
on Holiday Circle on Nov. 20.
Adrin Devonta Turner, 23, of
Forsyth Landing, was charged with
armed robbery and possession of mar
ijuana with intent to distribute while
Joshua Leon Hicks, 22, of Jones
Street, was also charged with armed
robbery.
Forsyth police chief Keith Corley
said Hicks also had drugs in his pos
session when he was arrested.
According to the incident report, at
about 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, two
males, later identified as Turner and
Hicks, entered Room No. 141 at
Ramada Inn. One of the room's two
occupants, Albert Poelvoorde, of
Forsyth, told Forsyth officer Bruce
Hughley he was sitting on his bed
when Turner and Hicks came into his
room and took his wallet, cell phone
and a room phone. One of the sus
pects brandished a pistol, and they
took $500 in cash from the victims
although Poelvoorde later found his
empty wallet still in the room. The
other occupant of the room was Josh
Moate, of Forsyth. Poelvoorde said he
did not know the men and added they
left in an unknown white SUV.
F orsyth police HIC KS
declined to com
ment on how the
suspects were iden
tified, but Corley
said the Monroe
County Sheriffs
Office assisted in
identifying them.
Turner was booked
into the Monroe
County Jail on Nov.
21 while Hicks was booked into the
jail six days later, on Nov. 27.
Warrants have been taken for a
third suspect, but he has yet to be
arrested.
TURNER
Trash
continued from the front
broke down at the same
time. That means many
green Clean-Rite trash cans
have remained along county
roadsides for at least five
days, and in the area of
Deer Creek subdivision it's
been a week. Clean-Rite
picks up garbage for many
of its customers on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
but didn't pick up the trash
of many customers until
Saturday this past week.
Some have gone almost a
month without it. Clean-
Rite customer Kim Waddle
of English Road said she
hasn't had garbage pickup
for three weeks, since before
Thanksgiving. She said her
biggest complaint is that the
company didn't contact cus
tomers to explain.
Sherri Baker of River
Walk subdivision said
Clean-Rite normally picks
up her trash on Wednesdays
but has been late twice in
the past month, one time
not coming until the week
end. However, she did get
someone on the phone at
Clean-Rite and was told
they were only running one
truck as they were having
trouble finding parts to
repair the other two trucks.
Dana Renaud, Monroe
County's recycling coordina
tor, said they've been inun
dated in the past week with
complaints about trash pick
up. All she can tell them,
said Renaud, is that Clean-
Rite is a private company
not affiliated with the coun
ty. The county does not offer
curbside pickup but does
receive Clean-Rite's trash at
its landfill.
While many customers
complained that Clean-Rite
officials wouldn't answer the
phone, the Reporter reached
Clean-Rite twice last week
and the company explained
its truck problem. "In all our
years doing this we've never
had two trucks go out the
same week," said the com
pany official.
Barbara Baswell Howell of
Forsyth told the Reporter
she's been on both sides of
this problem. Her family
used to own Clean-Rite and
she remains a customer.
"As a former partner in a
small garbage collection
business I can tell you it is
very difficult to survive,"
said Howell. "Yes it is very
frustrating to the customer
when your container is over
flowing, animals are getting
into it and strewing it all
over the place. You don't
know why the garbage has
not been picked up and the
company does not answer
the phone! My only criticism
is not communicating with
your customers."
Howell said garbage
trucks are very expensive,
break down frequently and
are costly to repair. Besides
that, said Howell, many cus
tomers don't pay on time or
ride a company until service
is cut. Meanwhile many
believe putting the garbage
in the local landfill is free,
"it most definitely is not
free," she said.
"By the time you pay pay
roll, taxes, insurance, fuel,
repairs and maintenance,
telephone services, landfill
cost, monthly payments on
loans for the expensive
trucks and equipment and
write-off bad debts, etc.,
there is little if any left
over," she said
When the inevitable
breakdowns occur, Howell
said sometimes they picked
up trash containers in pick
up trucks and trailers to
keep customers happy.
Other times they rented a
truck from a competitor, but
that was expensive as well.
While Howell understands
how hard it is, she said the
company should at least
have an answering machine
telling callers they are hav
ing equipment problems
rather than ignoring the
ringing phone. "That just
makes the customer madder
when they can't get any
answer as to what the prob
lem is," said Howell. Such
difficulties, said Howell,
finally led them to get out of
the business.
Besides Clean-Rite,
Renaud said she knows of
only one other curbside ven
dor serving Monroe County:
Glenda Williams and T&W
Curbside.
Shoney's
continued from the front
the way it was before."
Witherell, who also owns
the Shoney's in Lavonia in
north Georgia along 1-85,
said Shoney's customers
can expect excellent service,
excellent food and a clean
environment when they
come to the restaurant.
He said they're keeping
their best core employees
and also hiring a lot of good
new ones. Anyone interest
ed in working there can go
by the restaurant.
Waitress Bobbie Clark,
who's worked at the
Forsyth Shoney's for 13
years, is one of those who's
been kept on board. She
said they've done a lot of
cleaning and "it's looking
good". Clark said employees
were sort of expecting some
kind of change because they
kept running out of food
under the former owner.
Witherell said they'll re
open as soon as they pass a
final state inspection. An
inspector will have to be
brought in from out of town
as Monroe County is still
without an inspector since
the transfer to Macon of
controversial former inspec
tor Tom Baird.
