arrested in North Ga.
Another trucker
cuts ‘square’ corner
For the third time in some four years, the Ham
and Jenkins law office at the corner of Lee and
Johnston Streets on the Forsyth courthouse
square was struck by a tractor trailer on Wednes
day. Driver Ibrahim Alhammad, 31, of Lockport,
III. was traveling on Lee Street trying to take a
right turn on Johnston Street when he struck the
building. Alhammad was on his way to Thomson
and GPS told him, wrongly it turns out, to take
that route. Attorney Curtis Jenkins said they had
thought they had fixed the
problem when they took the
90-degree angle out of the
overhang of their building until
it was struck again last week.
Dawn Robinson and her son
Josh were delivering Boy Scout
popcorn orders to the law of
fice when they saw the tractor
trailer graze the building. "I
went 'uh oh 1 ," said Dawn
Robinson. The Robinsons said
the driver had hit the building
with his cab but didn't stop and
hit it again with his trailer, this
time doing damage. The driver
was not charged.

Flo steals the chamber show
Waffle House waitress “Flo”,
aka Ellen Hester of Monroe,
Ga., above, kept the audi
ence in stitches at the annual
Chamber of Commerce
banquet on Thursday with
her blend of down-home
wisdom and cheeky humor.
She spoke after dinner at the
Georgia Public Safety Train
ing Center. At the banquet,
the chamber honored outgo
ing board members, at right,
from left, Dr. Phil Viviani,
Jane Pennington, Connie
Ham, Wiley Crosby and
Melissa Copelan Mathis.
Caldwell Veterinary Clinic was named the 2012 Small
Business of the Year on Thursday. From left are Butler
Caldwell, Hazel Caldwell, and presenter Bob Harris, the
2011 Citizen of the Year. The nomination noted that Dr.
Butler Caldwell and his wife Hazel built their practice just
before the recession and have managed to grow despite
those headwinds, a testament to their dedication. The
Caldwells give much personal time to their clients and
community. Along with their commitment to a local non
profit, they also offer several free clinics each year. Dr.
Caldwell often gets up during the night to check on an ail
ing pet and makes house calls when necessary. Caldwell
just completed the rigorous process to become a “Certi
fied” vet. This accreditation recognizes the highest stan
dards of excellence in quality medical care. And while
Hazel’s role in the practice may not be front and center, it
has been said that she is the glue of the business, said
the nomination.
Telsa Stokes was named the
2012 Bill Bazemore Volunteer
of the Year. Stokes is the fifth
of 10 people to receive the
award which includes an origi
nal brick from the Welcome
Center. She receives the
award from present Bob Har
ris, the 2011 Citizen of the
Year. The nominator said
Stokes does not shy away
from hard work. She was a big
help with the Forsythia Festi
val this year. Stokes has the
best interest of the community
in mind and continuously of
fers to help. Always smiling,
Stokes brightens the day just
by showing up.

Suwanee police officers captured a
man on Dec. 2 who allegedly robbed
a Forsyth motel on Nov. 14.
Michael Shane Mickler, of
Albany, will be charged with
armed robbery in Monroe
County.
Mickler allegedly entered
the Forsyth Comfort Inn at
333 Harold G. Clarke
Parkway between 7:40 p.m.
and 8 p.m. on Nov. 14.
Mickler, who was wearing a
long blue sweater, did not
show a weapon, but employ
ees told Forsyth police they
believed he had one. Mickler escaped
with $310.
Forsyth police chief Keith Corley
said the department received a tip
that Mickler might have escaped in
a black vehicle with a Texas tag on it
that was parked in the Shoney's
parking lot nearby, so it was believed
that Mickler might have been pass
ing through on 1-75 from out of state.
Nevertheless, Lt. Alexander
Daniels of the Forsyth Police
Department put surveillance footage
of the Comfort Inn armed robbery on
the Georgia State Intelligence
Network (GSIN)'s web-based system.
Then, on Nov. 23, a suspect, wear
ing the same sweater and bearing a
nearly identical resemblance to the
suspect in the Comfort Inn robbery,
robbed a Hampton Inn in
Cartersville. Using the footage of the
two crimes on the GSIN network,
Forsyth and Cartersville officers
determined the suspect in each
crime must be the same man.
Finally, at about 10:15
p.m. on Dec. 2, the same
suspect, wearing different
clothing this time, tried to
commit armed robbery at a
Courtyard by Marriott in
Suwanee. Daniels said an
alert desk clerk noticed the
man enter the hotel with a
hood covering his head.
Seeing a customer at the
front desk, the suspect
stepped back outside for a
moment until the desk was empty.
When the suspect, identified as
Mickler, tried to re-enter, he found
out the desk clerk had locked the
double-door entrance and called
Suwanee police. Officers arrived at
the scene in time to arrest Mickler
although a Gwinnett County judge
would not grant a warrant to charge
Mickler with a crime in Suwanee
because an actual crime was never
committed.
However, Mickler is currently
being jailed in Gwinnett County
until he can be transferred to
Monroe County to face the charge.
Daniels said it was later confirmed
that Mickler was in fact traveling in
the vehicle that was reportedly
parked in the Shoney's parking lot.
The vehicle is owned by Mickler's
girlfriend.
