On the Outside Looking In
Stockpiling Twinkies, looking for leaders
JACKS
T
By DONALD
JACKSON DANIEL
I here’s been a lot
| of comment in re
gards to the
union shutting
down the
Twinkies factory but don’t
fear: if you have stocked up
on’em like I have, the facto
ry will be back up
and running, sold
to another bakery
(talk of a place in
Macon) before I
give out. Gonna
use them as stock
ing stuffers for my
grandchildren.
A friend of
mine out in Red
Lodge,
Montana, sug
gested the following for
tacos using Twinkies:
slice’em down the middle,
lick the cream out of them
then insert cooked ground
beef, lettuce, tomato.
Haven’t tried Bill’s
Twinkie tacos but to get
rid of the many I pur
chased, just might have to
try. If you try it, let me
know before I waste my
Twinkies.
SEVERAL times when I
have come home, I have
discovered a copy of “The
Watchtower” and other
Jehovah’s Witness publica
tions placed in my door.
The other day, I wished
someone I know a Merry
Christmas and he stated
he was a Jehovah’s
Witness and he didn’t cele
brate Christmas. I accept
ed his religious belief but
still wished him a Merry
Christmas.
Wanting to learn why
Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t
celebrate Christmas, I
looked them up on
Wikipedia. According to
my search, they do not
observe Christmas, Easter,
birthdays, or other holi
days and customs they
consider to have pagan ori
gins incompatible with
Christianity.
My friend further
explained since he
does not celebrate
Christmas, he volun
teers to work on
Christmas Day for
fellow workers that
want to spend the
day with their fami
lies. Now that’s
what I call being a
“Christian” no mat
ter what beliefs.
LAST week was a busy
week for the local chamber
of commerce. On Monday
night they sponsored their
annual Pre-Legislative
Forum so that our local
delegation could expound
on what issues they would
be facing in the upcoming
January convening of the
2013 legislature.
As reported in last
week’s The Reporter, our
Representatives---Robert
Dickey, Susan Holmes,
Allen Peake and Senator
Cecil Staton---showed up.
Also, spokespersons for
U.S. Senator Saxby
Chambliss and U.S.
Representative Austin
Scott were there. An
impressive group, willing
to express their opinions
on what will be going in
Atlanta and happening in
Washington
Who wasn’t there was
shameful, disgusting and
spectful. Nary a county
commissioner, Forsyth
Mayor or members of the
Forsyth City Council,
Leadership Monroe partic
ipants (one), local constitu
tional officers, member of
the board of education,
development authority
appointed members, sher
iff or chief of police. Guess
they are so in the “know”,
they don’t need to learn
and know more.
What is even more
shameful, disgusting, dis
respectful and negligent,
there were only 18 people
present. I thought the
chamber had a member
ship of close to 300-plus.
Ten percent of the mem
bers should have shown
up to support the chamber
and its’ efforts to keep us
informed. Maybe the
chamber should have
offered free tickets to the
Gun Lottery.
Another chamber event
was the Eggs and Issues
breakfast on Wednesday
morning. It was the first
one I have missed in a
year and it was due to
unexpected circum
stances....! flat overslept
when the alarm clock did
n’t go off because “a cat
must have crawled in a
transformer and disrupted
the power”. The speaker
was a representative of
the Georgia Banker’s
Association and from what
I heard, gave a very
informative talk on the
“state” of banking in
Georgia. (Wonder if the
commissioner from
District 3 showed up so
she can claim the $10
breakfast on her county
taxpayer-paid expense
report?)
Then on Thursday night,
the chamber’s annual ban
quet was the most success
ful in regards to atten
dance and a great program
which included honoring
Monroe County’s Small
Business of Year, Caldwell
Veterinary Clinic: Telsa
Stokes, Volunteer of the
Year; and Movene Futch,
Citizen of the Year. All
well-deserved.
Three Forsyth City
Council members showed
up for the banquet but no
Forsyth mayor or city
manager. One county com
missioner was recognized
and the school superin
tendent enjoyed the buffet.
No other county commis
sioners, newly elect com
mission chairman, elected
local constitutional offi
cers, sheriff... .you get the
idea...showed up.
Christmas shopping I
guess.
THE WINNER of the
question is Jane Newton
with $7.5 million proposed
for the fine arts center.
She wins a certificate for a
hot dog combo from the
Hot Dog House in High
Falls, fried green tomato
appetizer from the Whistle
Stop in Juliette, cookie
from Jonah’s and Blizzard
at Dairy Queen in
Forsyth.
Here’s The Question: In
the lyrics of “The Twelve
days of Christmas, On The
Sixth Day of Christmas
my true love sent to me”?
Just the one that was
given on the sixth day
Caroyln’s Counsel
Only God can halt downward spiral
BY CAROLYN MARTEL
W e are living in an age
when the outside pres
sures to conform to
this world’s standard
is constantly being
pressed upon us. What we are seeing
in our society, our schools and in
liberal churches is a chipping
away at the foundational truths
that have made us a strong na
tion. Look what has happened
to our nation since 1962 when
prayer was taken out of our
public schools. It is a docu
mented fact that SAT
scores for high school sen
iors have almost without exception
gone down every year. Since prayer
was taken out of the schools and the
Ten Commandments have been taken
down off the walls we have witnessed
a moral decline in our nation. It’s a
downward spiral into a moral
cesspool.
So if we are not accountable to
Almighty God and we teach that
there are no moral absolutes then
we open the door for situational
ethics to be taught in our schools,
our universities and our churches.
Situational ethics tries to avoid
words like never and always.
Situational ethics teaches there’s no
one standard that fits all. This
makes morality subjective. What’s
wrong for you might be OK for me.
It gives people an excuse to not obey
the rules if it doesn’t suit them or
their situation. In other words
there are no moral absolutes— just
differences of opinion. Therefore
God’s standard of morality is
■ jf , being thrown out the window.
And so people are being
brain washed and if there
are no moral absolutes then
alternative life-styles must
be OK. We also see that
the traditional concept of
marriage is being chal-
God’s standard is one man
and one woman. Morally bankrupt
people are challenging the tradition
al concept of one man and one
woman as the model for matrimony
and two states recently approved
same sex marriage. Some are not
content with this and may want to
marry their pet or maybe let’s marry
three people at the same time! A
couple of years ago I saw on the
news that a woman was planning on
marrying herself because she had
not found a man that suits her. She
had already picked out her wedding
gown and ring. You know there’s
dumb and there’s dumber!
lenged.
This alarming breakdown of socie
ty will continue because there are
those who want to rewrite and chal
lenge the standards that have been
based on God’s Word—standards
that have made this nation one of
the greatest places in the world to
live, work, worship and raise a fami
ly. It’s a sobering thought that we
could be only one generation away
from a complete collapse of our soci
ety. Think about that for a
moment. All it takes is just one
generation failing to pass on the
baton of Christianity and the values
that have made America great! So
we have a responsibility to keep the
standard lifted up. If we fail to
stand up and fight for what we
believe, we will one day find that
what we once declared to be truths
and moral absolutes will only
become outdated opinions, thoughts
and ideas. In fact this is already
happening and this is one of the rea
sons our nation is so philosophically
divided. We must keep the moral
standard lifted even in the face of
being labeled politically incorrect or
out of touch with modern society.

manager for the Monroe County
Reporter.
