Funeral Home Chapel.
Survivors include: a devoted and loving wife of 41
years, Annie Ruth Buckner; two dedicated God
Children, Shomeka Brown and Jai Ramsaran of West
Palm Beach, FL; one devoted nephew, Victor Freeman,
of West Palm Beach, FL; two sisters, Annie (George)
Grier of Atlanta, GA, Ruth (Rickey) Brantley of
Forsyth, GA; six brothers, Tommy Lewis Buckner,
William Buckner, Jimmy Buckner, John Robert (Gloria)
Buckner, George (Rosa) Buckner, all of Forsyth, GA;
Charles (Marjorie) Buckner of St. Petersburg, FL; two
aunts, Gladys Dudley, Myrtice (Frank) Wilson, both of
West Palm Beach, Florida; one uncle, James Searcy of

Col. Thornton Akin Burns, Jr. US ARMY (Ret), of
Forsyth, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012. Funeral services
were held Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Forsyth First
Baptist Church with burial in Forsyth City Cemetery.
Dr. H. Darrell Watson officiated.
Col. Burns, the son of the late Thornton Akin Burns,
Sr. and Mary Emily Zellner Burns, was born July 12,
1932, in Forsyth, Georgia. He was a graduate of Gordon
Military College, Barnesville, Georgia. He attended
Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia and was
a graduate of the United States Military Academy, West
Point, New York. He retired after twenty-eight years
from the United States Army, having served two tours of
duty in Vietnam, and served as the United States Army
Defense Attache Officer at the US Embassy Helsinki,
Finland.
Survivors include his wife, Susan V. Burns of Forsyth,
daughter, Katherine (Craig) Basel of Richmond Hill,
Georgia, sister, Charlotte Burns Adams of Tucker,
Georgia, brother, Andrew David Burns of Commerce,
Georgia, grandchildren, Christian Paul Basel of
Charleston, South Carolina, Nicholas Craig Basel of
Sandy Springs, Georgia and Kathleen Thornton Basel of
Statesboro, Georgia.

Vietnam Veterans of America, PO Box 1144, Forsyth,
GA 31029 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, Post

Fredric Harvey ‘Fred’ Greene
June 6, 1934 - Dec. 4, 2012
Fredric Harvey “Fred” Greene of Forsyth died Tuesday,
Dec. 4, 2012. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec.
8, at Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 1217 Forest
Hill Road, Macon. Burial followed at Southview
Cemetery, North Church Road, Thomaston, Ga. Rev.
Jimmy Towson officiated.
Mr. Greene, the son of the late, Harvey Raleigh Greene
and Antoinette Margaret Hardage Greene, was born
June 6, 1934, in Thomaston. Mr. Greene was a graduate
of R.E. Lee High School, played football for Florida State
University, and graduated from the University of
Georgia. He served as Lt. Col. in the U. S. Army Reserve
and was retired owner and operator of Greene’s Propane
Gas Company. Mr. Greene was on the Board of the Beef
Masters and was Georgia Cattleman of the Year. He was
inducted into the Upson County Sports Hall of Fame
and the Mid-Ga. Cattleman’s Assoc. Hall of Fame, and
was a member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church,
Grace Bible Class and an Eagle Scout. He sponsored sev
eral turkey hunts for the Wounded Warriors Project and
loved sharing his farm with his friends and family.
During his retirement, he and Betty Joe loved traveling
and visited 49 states, staying with friends along the way.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Joe Peters
Greene, of Forsyth. Children: Mike (Peggy) Greene of
Thomaston, Beverly (Terry) Layson of Macon and Jody
(Jeff) DeFore of Forsyth. Grandchildren: Marie (Karl)
Broder of Atlanta, Tony Greene of San Antonio, Tex.,
Jessica (Josh) Robertson of Washington, D.C., Brett
Layson of Washington, D.C., Andrew Layson of Macon,
Hunter DeFore of Forsyth and Lauren DeFore of
Forsyth. Brother, Carey Greene of Bonita Springs, Fla.:
sister, Judy Greene of Thomaston; and sister-in-law,
Frances Greene of Albany. His brother, Harold Bruce
Greene, preceded him in death.

James Albert Evans

James Albert Evans, of Juliette, died Saturday, Dec. 8,
2012. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Dec. 11,
2012, at Monroe Hills Memorial Gardens. The Reverend
James R. Story officiated.
Mr. Evans, the son of the late AB Evans and Sarah
Pauline Peacock Evans, was born June 28, 1949, in
Cochran. His daughter; Erika Michelle Evans, his
brother, Billy Evans and his grandchildren, Kristen and
Maria Stegall preceded him in death. He was a retired
contractor and a veteran of the United States Army,
serving during Vietnam.
Survivors include his children, Melissa (Donald Berry)
Evans of Forsyth, Michael Jaynes of Byron and Liana
Jaynes of Monroe County, sister, Jackie (Wilbur) Mosely
of Milledgeville, grandchildren, CJ Norton, Angel
Stegall, Jimmy Coe, Jr., Dustin Stegall, several nieces
and nephews.

Marjorie Nell Smith Hammond, of Peachtree City, died
Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at home. Graveside services will
be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at
Ramah Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, 1274
Ramah Church Road, Barnesville, Georgia 30204. The
Reverend David Sanders will officiate. The family will
greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday,
December 11, 2012, at Monroe County Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Hammond, the daughter of the late Andrew
Chesney and Ollie Ruth Taylor Smith was born Aug. 8,
1926, in Atlanta, Georgia. Her husband, John Hayes
Hammond preceded her in death. She was a homemak
er.
Survivors include her children, Andrea Colson of
Peachtree City and Susan (David) White of Macon, four
grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

William Robert ‘Bob’ Land
April 10, 1933 - Dec. 4, 2012
William Robert “Bob” Land of Smarr died Tuesday,
Dec. 4, 2012. Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 7,
at Forsyth United Methodist Church with burial in
Monroe Memorial Gardens. Dr. Bobby Land and Rev.
Ken Stephens officiated.
Mr. Land, the son of the late Jesse and Ancie Crosby
Land, was born April 10, 1933, in Macon. He was a
graduate of Lanier High School and attended Mercer
University. Mr. Land retired from Southern Bell and
was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, serving during the
Korean War. He was a member of Forsyth United
Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, past presi
dent, secretary and treasurer of Forsyth Exchange
Club, past president of Monroe County Wildlife
Federation, member of Telephone Pioneers of America,
member of American Legion, and member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Land, of Smarr; son,
Dr. Bobby (Ginny) Land of Forsyth; grandchildren,
Nathan (Crissy) Land of San Antonio, Tex., Britanny
(Andrew) Smith of Charleston, S.C. and Emily Land of
Toccoa; great granddaughter, Ava Mae Land of San
Antonio, Tex.

Aug. 16, 1942- Dec. 1, 2012
Jack William Turner Sr., age 70, of Juliette passed
away Saturday, Dec. 1 in Macon. He was born Aug. 16,
1942 in Columbus, Ga. to the late William Millard and
Babbette Turner.
Mr. Turner is survived by a daughter, Catharine
Gaynell Turner, and daughter-in-law, Lawanda
Coleman, of Conyers; Cynthia Hardin and her husband,
Richard, of OwensBoro, Ky.; son, Jack W. Turner Jr., and
his wife, Jessica, of Jackson, Jeffery Scott Purvis of
Forsyth; grandchildren, Calabria D. Turner, Kirsten
Nicole Sparrow, Christian Makalin Turner, Tatum Shaye
Turner, Brian Bunn, Patrick Haney, Levi Purvis,
Chelsea Purvis, McKenna Purvis, Sarah Coleman and
Jacob Hyde; sisters, Georgia Ruth Turner, of
Tallahassee, and Barbara Anita Trammell, of Atlanta;
several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Jack Turner will be held at 5
p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Juliette United
Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley Harrell officiating.

Lee Ann Scott of Culloden died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.

Watson officiated.
Mrs. Scott, daughter of the late Brenda Ellen Hampton
Campbell, was born March 17, 1962, in Macon. She was
a special education teacher for Crawford County Middle
School.
Survivors include her husband, Douglas L. Scott of
Culloden; children, Benjamin Douglas Scott of Newport
News, Va., Dustin Duanne Scott of Kingsport, Tenn. and
Awa Diakite of Culloden; father, Duanne Lee Campbell
of Ashburn, Ga.; and one grandchild, Easten McCoy of
Newport News,Va.
