Schools, Bittick
reviewing security
after Conn, horror
BY WILL DAVIS
Monroe County schools are
reevaluating their security
procedures in light of Friday's
horrific mass murder at
Sandy Hook Elementary
School in Connecticut.
Superintendent Anthony
Pack said as news of the
shooting broke on Friday he
reminded administrators to
make sure that all exterior
school doors are locked dur
ing the day. He also said it’s
important to ensure that visi
tors and parents enter the
school from one front
entrance door and get a visi
tor's pass if they're staying.
Meanwhile, Pack said each
school has an emergency plan
and he reminded administra
tors and teachers to review
those plans on Monday.
"We want to enhance what
we do," said Pack.
Pack said the school system
plans to continue adding cam
eras to the fronts, backs and
sides of its six school build
ings for security as well.
"We've done that," said
Pack, "but we need to add
more."
The school system doesn't
use metal detectors at
entrances, except for specta
tors as they enter basketball
games.
Pack said it's important for
the front offices of each school
to continue to be careful as
the gatekeepers to the
schools. He said he was at a
school on Friday and watched
a secretary refuse to release a
child to a parent until the
parent went to the car to
retrieve their identification
card.
"It's an inconvenience for
parents to go get it," said
Pack, "The parent got a little
upset. But what if we let the
child go with the wrong per
son?"
Pack said he told the secre
tary she did the right thing.
"It's good to see our people
adhering to procedures," said
Pack.
Sheriff John Cary Bittick
said his office is meeting with
school administrators to
make sure their procedures
are up to date. While there's
been talk of placing a deputy
at every school entrance,
Pack said he and Bittick have
not discussed it and he
believes that would raise
manpower and cost issues.
Bittick conceded that the
Connecticut shooter, Adam
Lanzo, who broke a window
to get into the school, would
have been hard to stop short
of an armed person returning
fire.
