Leon Goodrum hosts Forsyth youth
at King Center, World of Coke
BY ANNIE MCCRAY
On Saturday, Nov. 23,
Leon Goodrum, who
established his Goodrum
Foundation in Forsyth to
tutor school children
needing help in improv
ing their grades, spon
sored 22 students, seven
parents, two instructors,
and two Zeta Phi Beta
members on a field trip
to Atlanta to tour the
Martin Luther King Jr.
Center and the World of
Coca-Cola. Mr. Goodrum,
CEO of Goodrum
Enterprises in Atlanta,
owns seven McDonald
Restaurants in the
Atlanta downtown area
including Hartfield
Jackson Atlanta Airport.
He was born in Forsyth
and graduated from the
Samuel Hubbard School
for black students in
1958.
The instructors' goal for
the field trip was to show
students real life experi
ences and events impact
ing the social structure of
our society. The instruc
tors, Mrs. Annie McCray
and Mr. Rodney Stewart,
planned the field trip to
allow students to listen,
read, and to experience
some of the topics cov
ered in class. We left our
Department of
Corrections campus in
Forsyth at 9:30 a.m. and
our first stop was at the
Rev. Martin Luther King
Jr. Center in downtown
Atlanta. The students
visited the historic
Ebenezer Baptist Church
located on Auburn
Avenue, society's mecca
for black businesses dur
ing the 1920's. They lis
tened to Rev. Martin
Luther King Jr.'s record
ed speech as they sat in
the pews of the beautiful
sanctuary. Their tour
continued to the reflec
tion pool where Rev.
Martin Luther King Jr.
and his wife, Coretta
Scott King's, crypt was
viewed. Several students
were amazed that their
bodies were in the tombs.
They were abuzz with
questions. Then the stu
dents entered the King
Center where they could
read about Rev. Martin
Luther King Jr.'s life and
works. They observed
pictures and articles. The
tour at the Center ended
at the childhood home of
Rev. Martin Luther King
Jr. on Auburn Avenue.
The World of Coca Cola
was the next stop. This
tour began with a tour
guide explaining the his
tory of Coca Cola--its
marketing and its distri
bution. The students fol
lowed on the guided tour
and a self-guided tour.
The highlight for most
students was tasting the
different Coca-Cola fla
vors from more than 70
countries. One student
was more interested in
seeking the Coca-Cola
snowman. Some Cokes
tasted good; others did
not to the students. We
sampled a new Coca-Cola
flavor called a chocolate
coke. Mr. Goodrum com
mented that this flavor
was about the best he
had tasted except for the
regular Coca-Cola.
Everyone left the World
of Coca-Cola with a coke.
We all dined at Mr.
Goodrum's McDonald’s
Restaurant on Ralph
David Abernathy Blvd.
on Atlanta's west side.
We ordered our choices
from the menu on Mr.
Goodrum's tab. One of
the students commented
"I can't believe he is
doing all of this for us."
We all gained some
thing from this field trip
and we all enjoyed it.
The parents and volun
teers put pictures on
Facebook. The instruc
tors enjoyed the stu
dents' good behavior and
the interest they dis
played. For most of the
students, this was their
first visit to these attrac
tions. Mr. Goodrum said
he enjoyed watching the
excitement of the stu
dents for this field trip.
Additionally, he stated he
had a lot of fun, but he
had not spent a whole
day with this many chil
dren in years! The field
trip ended at 4 p.m.
when we all returned to
Forsyth. I had the stu
dents write about their
experiences for the next
class session.
