Atlanta man arrested for DUI after high-speed chase
Monroe County Sheriffs
Office deputies arrested an
Atlanta man after a chase on
Dec. 19 that ended just inside
the Bibb County line.
Numerous motorists on 1-75
began calling the Sheriff s
Office Communications Center
just before 2 p.m. saying that
a black sports car was speed
ing in excess of 100 mph and
being driven erratically on 1-75
southbound near mile marker
185. Sheriffs Office depu
ties responded and attempted
to pull over the 2013 black
Mercedes. The Mercedes slowed
to 65 m.p.h., would not stop
and continued drifting between
lanes and into and out of the
emergency lane. Near the Pate
Road overpass, spike strips
were used and the left- front,
and rear tires were damaged.
The suspect- then sped up
t-o 94 mph as the tires and
then rims disintegrated. The
Mercedes eventually wrecked
just- inside the Bibb County
line at- mile marker 171 in the
median on 1-75. The driver of
the Mercedes, Robert- Magbee,
27, of Atlanta was removed
from the wrecked car and
taken to the Medical Center of
Central Georgia for treatment,
of non-life-threatening injuries.
He is being charged with:
failure to maintain lane, reck
less driving, speeding 94/65,
littering a highway, fleeing
and attempting to elude a law
enforcement- officer and DUI.
Magbee was booked into the
Monroe County Jail the follow
ing day.

A 23-year-old white
Statenville man was

juana after a traffic stop
on College Street- on Dec.
19. At- about- 11:59 p.m.,
Dep. Daniel Ahlst.rom
saw a silver Pontiac
Grand Am traveling with
out- a tag light- and failing
to maintain its lane on
Patrol Road near College
Street- Ahlst-rom stopped
the car on College Street
and smelled the odor
of raw marijuana com
ing from within the car.
The male driver said he
didn’t- have a license,
so Ahlst-rom ordered
him to step out- of the
car. Ahlst-rom asked the
driver when he last- used
marijuana, and he said
he smoked some earlier
in the day. Dep. John
Thompson arrived at
tire scene and assisted
with searching the car.
Ahlst-rom administered
several field sobriety
tests and determined the
driver was not. impaired.
The driver told Ahlst-rom
his license was sus
pended but. said he did
not. have any marijuana
on him. Ahlst-rom then
took the driver to the
Monroe County Jail.
As the driver got. out. of
Ahlstrom’s patrol car,
Ahlstrom saw a candy
wrapper wedged into
the back seat- Ahlst-rom
then searched the seat,
and found a small plastic
bag containing suspected
marijuana. The driver

Atlanta driver
charged with DUI
in traffic stop
A 40-year-old black
Atlanta man was arrested
and charged with DUI
after a traffic stop on 1-75
North on Dec. 18. At.
about. 11:55 p.m., Cpl.
Sam Leggett, saw a dark
colored vehicle on 1-75
North that- appeared
to have no t.aillight.s.
When Leggett- got- closer,
he realized the vehicle
did have t.aillight.s, but.
they were obscured
by dark tinted lenses
and were barely visible
from behind the vehicle.
Leggett- smelled a very
strong odor of air fresh
ener coming from the
vehicle. The male driver
told Leggett- he didn’t,
have a license, but- he
did produce a Georgia
ID card. Leggett- spotted
on t-he passenger seat- an
unopened Bud Light- can
with the plastic six-pack
collar still attached to it.
Leggett- asked the driver
where t-he rest- of t-he six-
pack was, and the driver
responded he had not.
been drinking. Leggett,
then asked the driver
to get- out- of the car,
but- the driver was slow
and reluctant to comply.
Before getting out-, the
driver grabbed a pack of
cigarettes, and although
Leggett- t-old him to leave
them in the car, he pulled
one out- and lit- it- any
way. Once outside of the
vehicle, Leggett- saw the
driver was moving slowly,
and his eyes were blood
shot- and watery. Leggett,
also smelled alcohol on
the driver even over the
smell of the cigarette.
The driver registered a
high positive for alcohol
on a field breath test. He
also failed several field
sobriet-y tests. Leggett,
determined the driver’s
license was suspended
out- of Clayton Count-y,
and he had a warrant- for
his arrest- out- of Laurens
Count-y. Once at- t-he
Monroe County Jail, the
driver tested above the
legal limit- for alcohol on
a state breath test. The
driver also requested
a blood test- at- Monroe
County Hospital, and
Leggett- asked the driver
if he needed to stop by
an ATM to get- money
for the test. The driver
responded that- he was
not- going t-o pay for t-he
test- and said paying for
it- was Leggett’s problem.
Dep. Daniel Ahlst-rom
took Legget-t- t-o t-he hos
pital, and the driver
agreed to pay for the
test- on his credit- card.
However, just- before a
nurse ran his credit- card,
the driver changed his
mind and decided against,
the test. The driver was
also charged with driving
while license suspended,
an open container viola
tion and having tinted
t.aillight. covers.
