National music honor society
chartered at Mary Persons
BY MARLEIGH
KUCKUCK
Mary Persons High
School welcomed its new
organization, Tri-M Music
Honor Society, on Nov. 21.
Family and friends gath
ered as young chorus and
band students were
inducted into the char
tered chapter. Held in the
chorus room, attendees
walked into an enchanti
ng view of a candlelit cer
emony.
Special guests present to
honor this night included
Supt. Anthony Pack,
Principal Jim Finch, Asst.
Principal Sarah Alford,
Asst Principal Tammy
Marion, Music Supporter
Barbara Dean, Retired
Choral Director of Duke
University Purcell Kelley,
Band Director of Monroe
County Middle School
Kyle Sargent, and Chorus
Director of MCMS
LeaAnne Walters.
Ms. Dean, choral direc
tor Charles Hernandez’s
mentor, began the cere
mony with a speech about
the choices one makes
that will change life forev
er. Using visuals, Ms.
Dean stated the impor
tance of music in chil
dren’s lives. Music is heal
ing and a way to express
oneself. She presented
students with a hand
made gift of music
inspired bookmarks.
Each of the 26 members
are the best of their class.
They excel in their talent.
Membership is offered
through invitation only.
Members must not only
be masters of their talent,
but show leadership skills
as well as success in aca
demics. Officers were cho
sen based on these crite
ria as well as personality.
Mr. Finch presented the
charter to Mr. Thompson
and Mr. Hernandez, offi
cially bringing to reality
the Tri-M Music Honor
Society. As a chartered
chapter, Mary Persons’
Tri-M is now a part of the
national society. The advi
sors installed officers:
President Wes Thompson,
Vice President Kyle
Sullivan, Secretary
Marleigh Kuckuck,
Treasurer Lindsey
Kinsella, and Historian
Ben West.
The original name of
Tri-M was Modern Music
Masters. Modern signifies
accepting the past and
building on the founda
tion of the classical art
forms in order to bring
forth an eternally modern
music society. Music rep
resents a universal lan
guage that predates writ
ten language. Masters are
those who have achieved
a high degree of proficien
cy. Tri-M members meet
the criteria to join a socie
ty that serves others
through musical talents
and sheds light on an
overlooked department.
Members recited the
pledge to the red Tri-M
banner showing their
willingness to carry out
the principles of the Tri-M
Music Honor Society.
Words rang out through
the room as light danced
off the walls as if the
pledge was music in itself.
Finally, Marleigh
Kuckuck called each can
didate to the stage to be
presented with a member
ship pin emblem, card,
and certificate by the
advisors and Mr. Finch.
After the students were
inducted, each special
guest was offered induc
tion as honorary members
of the Tri-M Music Honor
Society. They are all dedi
cated to the cause of
music and music educa
tion and have contributed
to local, national, or inter
national musical culture.
Tri-M’s 60-year history
has welcomed many hon
orary members.
The members sang the
Tri-M Loyalty Song,
“Musical Masters, Hail to
Thee.” Treasurer Lindsey
Kinsella, was the accom
panist, showing not only
her choral talents but her
instrumental talents. It
was a beautiful ending to
an enchanting musical
night.
