Mary Persons FFA teams excel at Region

The Mary Persons FFA
Chapter competed in
three Central Region
Area III contests on
Sept.25 at Camp John
Hope in Fort Valley.
Our Chapter competed
in Floral Design, Tractor
Driving, and
Landjudging.
Levi Nopen represent
ed Mary Persons in the
Floral Design contest.
Each participant
designed and produced a
flower
arrange
ment
from the
supplies
that they
were
provided.
They
also had
to take a
test over
Floral
Design
and the
Floral
Industry, and had to
identify 25 Floral plants.
Levi placed 2nd out of
28 students from differ
ent schools in Area III.
The top two students
will compete at the
State Contest on
Saturday, Dec. 6, at
Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College.
Hunter Defore repre
sented Mary Persons in
the Tractor Operations
and
Maintenance
Contest. In
the Tractor
Operations
contest, stu
dents per
form a pre
trip inspec
tion of a trac
tor, operate
tractor
through a
course, take
a written
test, and answer ques
tions out of tractor man
uals. Hunter was very
successful placing fifth
out of 22 students from
Area III.
In Landjudging, stu
dents analyze four dif
ferent sites of land:
determining slope, top
soil thickness, erosion,
topsoil texture, perme
ability, drainage, and
effective depth. After
determining these fac
tors students classify
the site
among
eight land
classes.
They rec
ommend
use and
land prac
tices.
Mary
Persons
had a
Senior and
Junior
team com
pete in the
Area Landjudging con
test.
Our Junior team con
sisted of Mitchell
English, Chase
Grizzard, J D Richards,
and Michael Skinner.
We won the Junior con
test and qualified for the
State contest. Six junior
teams from Area III
were in the competition.
Individually, Michael
placed 1st overall,
Gramm Coffman concentrates at Land-
judging contest.

placed 4th individually
out of 40 students in
this division of the con
test. Courtney Stovall
placed 5th individually.
Both the Mary Persons
Landjudging teams
qualified for state com
petition by placing in
the top two teams at
Area. The State
Landjudging contest will
be held at the Stripling
Irrigation Research
Center in Camilla on
Oct. 24 and 25.

from the new adminis
trator at Monroe County
Middle School about his
plans and philosophies
to maintain the top
ranked school. The
Chicago native spoke of
hislife journey. Not plan
ning to change a lot,
Yarber offered a few new
tips that may help to
keep things in order.
This year an "eyes on
policy" will be imple
mented which includes
supervision in the hall
ways and bully monitor
ing to increase the per
sonal safety of each stu
dent. A fun addition to
the schedule will be a
15-minute "Bulldog
Break" where students
can socialize and inter
act.
