INCIDENTS
The following arrests
were reported by the
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Department Oct. 6-15.
An arrest means some
one has been charged
with a crime, but the law
considers them innocent
until proven guilty.
Red Creek Road
resident reports
guns, cash stolen
At about 12:12 p.m. on
Oct. 6, Dep. Burt Ritchie
met with a male Red
Creek Road resident who
said three guns and $600
to $700 in cash had been
stolen from his home. The
resident said he believes
his grandson entered
his home and stole the
items, and he said he has
witnessed his grandson
stealing from his wallet
previously. One of the
three guns was a Clock.
Ritchie instructed the res
ident to call him once he
finds the serial numbers
for the guns.
Property owner
reports batteries
stolen from shed
At about 12:28 p.m.
on Oct. 12, Sgt. Lawson
Bittick was notified of a
theft near the intersection
of Pine View Drive and
Oakridge Drive in Betsy
Lynn subdivision. Bittick
then met with the male
property owner at his
bam near the location of
the theft. The owner said
he discovered a Pioneer
radio was missing out of
his Ford Ranger pickup
truck sometime around
Oct. 4. The owner said
he then noticed on Oct.
10 that several car style
batteries and one smaller
cart style battery were
missing from his shed by
an old dairy barn. The
owner said he went to
Forsyth Recycling Center
on Oct. 11 and the man
ager told him a white
male had sold multiple
batteries and that he still
had them on the property.
The owner said at least
two of the batteries were
his. The manager said the
suspect received $53.35
for the batteries, and the
owner said he was still
missing $400 in items.
The manager said the
batteries were sold to him
at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 10
by the suspect, who lives
within one-half mile of
the property. The owner
had obtained a copy of the
sales receipt. The prop
erty is marked off with a
“No Trespassing” sign at
the front of the bam.
Traveler reports
purse theft at
1-75 rest area
At about 5:59 p.m. on
Oct. 12, Cpl. Willie Brown
met with a Hazelhurst
woman who said while
she was using the rest
room at the 1-75 South
rest area, someone hit
the stall door where her
pocket book was hang
ing. The woman said her
pocket book fell and all
of its contents spilled out
onto the floor. The woman
said when she picked up
her pocket book and the
items in it, she noticed
her black coach wallet
was missing. The woman
said the wallet contained
her driver’s license, sev
eral credit cards, a debit
card, a social security
card and $200 cash. The
woman said she had
already deactivated all of
her credit cards.
Forsyth residents
charged with
growing weed
A 60-year-old black man
and a 53-year-old black
man, both of Forsyth,
were each arrested and
charged with manufac
turing marijuana after
deputies found the dmg
growing at a Brandywine
Drive home on Oct. 7. At
about 1:25 p.m. on Oct.
7, Sgt-. William Jackson
and Dep. Burt Ritchie
went to a Brandywine
Drive home about a dis
pute. Dep. P. Stewart
was already on scene and
told the other deputies
that the male resident
wanted his female next-
door neighbor to stay
away from his property.
Stewart said she noti
fied the neighbor of the
resident’s request. The
neighbor said she would
not go on the resident’s
property but told Stewart
there was marijuana
growing in the resident’s
backyard. Jackson asked
the resident if there was
anything illegal in his
backyard. The resident
responded, “Not that I
know of, but if it is, it
ain’t mine.” The resident
then gave Jackson con
sent to search. Stewart,
Ritchie and Dep. John
Thompson searched the
backyard and found a
marijuana plant in a
green hanging pot located
behind a large elephant
ear plant. The resident’s
brother said he noticed
the plant about a month
prior while he was cutting
grass. Both the resident
and his brother said the
marijuana plant belonged
to another brother, who
also lives at the home
with them. Jackson then
met with the other broth
er, and all three residents
denied the plant belonged
to them. Sgt-. Ricky Davis
and Inv. Martin Ursitti
then arrived at the home
with a search warrant.
During the search, depu
ties found marijuana in
the other brother’s bed
room inside of a metal
container, as well as a
black smoking device.
Inside the resident’s
bedroom there were sev
eral drug-related objects
discovered, including
a glass smoking device
containing steel wool, a
Bud Light can with holes
punched in it, which is
consistent with smok
ing crack cocaine, and
a metal cigar container
with marijuana residue.
The resident admitted
the items found in his
room belonged to him.
The resident, the 60-year-
old, was also charged
with possession of drug
related objects. The other
resident, the 53-year-old,
was also charged with
possession of marijuana.
The other resident also
had a valid warrant
from the Forsyth Police
Department for failure to
appear in court. The third
brother was not charged.
Tools, trailer
stolen from Pate
Road resident
At about 7:17 a.m.
on Oct. 15, Dep. John
Thompson went to a
Pate Road home about a
theft. The male resident
said someone broke into
his enclosed work trailer
and stole numerous tools
sometime the previous
night. The resident said
he left the trailer at his
home because he was
remodeling the house.
The resident said the
suspect went to the back
of the trailer and tried
to drill a hole in the
locking system. He said
when that didn’t work,
the suspect then pried
the whole locking system
off of the trailer, damag
ing the metal and wood.
The stolen tools included:
two drills, a Porter cable,
three framing guns, two
saws, a Craftsman three-
piece set and an enclosed
trailer. The stolen items
were valued at about
$1,905. The resident said
all of the stolen tools were
in their original cases,
and he said he would
definitely be able to iden
tify them. There were no
known suspects.
Resident reports
jewelry, pistol
stolen from home
At about 7:20 p.m. on
Oct. 14, Cpl. Sam Leggett
went to a Mace Manor
home about a burglary.
The female resident said
she noticed that numer
ous jewelry items and a
.22-caliber Derringer pis
tol were missing from her
home. The resident said
she last saw the items
on Oct. 4. The resident
said she suspects her son
took the gun and jew
elry because there was
no forced entry into the
home, and her son knew
where the stolen items
were kept. The resident
said her son was the only
person who has been in
her home unattended
since she last saw the
items. She said her son
helped her in the yard
on Oct. 4, but he left to
go to a neighbor’s home
for a brief time. She said
when he returned, he
acted nervous and was
in a hurry to leave. The
resident said she did not
have the serial number
for the pistol. The stolen
jewelry included: a white
gold diamond ring, a
chocolate-colored watch,
a black onyx ring, a pearl
necklace and a diamond
bracelet. The stolen items
were valued at about
$2,225.
Perdue Farms
tractor trailer
hits railroad arm
At about 9:15 a.m. on
Oct. 14, Dep. Chad Beck
saw a Perdue Farms feed
truck crossing the rail
road tracks at Hwys. 18
and 41 South. Beck saw
the truck enter on the
tracks just as the railroad
crossing arms started to
come down, and the arm
came down onto the top
of the truck. The arm
was then tom off and
thrown to the ground by
the truck. Beck met with
the male truck driver who
said he did not see the
arms coming down as he
crossed the track. Norfolk
Southern was then noti
fied of the damage to the
crossing arm.
Griffin driver
arrested for DUI
after one-car
wreck on square
A 47-year-old white
Griffin woman was
arrested and charged
with DUI after a wreck
on North Lee Street on
Oct. 14. At about 2 p.m.,
Lt. Brad Freeman was
flagged down by a woman
at United Bank. The
woman said a 2011 Ford
Fiesta had wrecked on
the courthouse square,
and the car’s female driv
er was unresponsive. The
woman said the car was
locked and still in drive.
Freeman saw the car had
hit a parked 2007 Toyota
Camry. The driver’s eyes
were barely open and
she was clutching an
electronic cigarette. The
car was still in drive, and
the driver’s foot was on
the gas petal. A Forsyth
Fire Department truck
arrived at the scene, and
Freeman requested one
of the firefighters burst
the side rear window of
the car. Freeman then
entered the car and put
it in park as Monroe
County EMTs pulled
the driver out of the car.
The driver appeared to
be under the influence of
drugs. Freeman searched
the driver’s purse and
located several bottles of
prescription medication.
Monroe County EMTs
transported the driver to
Monroe County Hospital.
Freeman met with the
driver at the hospital, and
her words were slurred.
She refused a state blood
test. Freeman returned
30 minutes later, and the
driver was still intoxi
cated. Her eyes were
very red, and she had a
blank stare on her face.
The driver appeared to
comprehend very little of
what Freeman said.
