Bird Lady visits London
The Atlanta Falcons Bird Lady (a.k.a. Forsyth native
Carolyn Freeman) traveled to London last Tuesday to
watch her beloved Falcons face the Detroit Lions at
Wembley Stadium on Sunday. It was Freeman’s first
trip to Europe since she visited the continent in 1979
as part of a Tift College choir tour led by Lee Collins
of Forsyth (right). Freeman visited her former men
tor’s home on the eve of her trip on Oct. 20 to re
count memories of their tour, which took them all
over western Europe and even into Sweden. Collins
said the group sang at 40 different Georgia churches
prior to going to raise money for the trip and even
sang at the White House for then-President Jimmy
Carter. The Bird Lady reported back on her travels
last week to numerous media outlets, including Ma
con’s Fox 24 and Atlanta’s CBS 46. Unfortunately,
her Falcons fell short, blowing a 21-point halftime
lead and losing on a last-second field goal.

The Mary Persons Bulldogs'
defense posted its third shutout in
four games and senior tailback Dee
High rushed for 200 yards and four
touchdowns in leading MP to a 31-0
blanking of Veterans at home on
Friday night.
With the win, MP improved its
overall record to 7-1 (4-0 in Region
2-AAAA) and moved up to No. 8 in
the Atlanta Journal Constitution's
AAAA poll on Sunday. The Bulldogs
will likely need wins in each of their
final two regular season games at
Baldwin on Friday and at home on
Nov. 7 against West Laurens to win
its first region championship in 17
years.
MP was seeking revenge against
Veterans on Friday night after a
shocking 10-0 home loss in 2013 to
the Warhawks prevented the
Bulldogs from ending their region
title drought. While Veterans
brought back many of the same
players from a year ago, the
Warhawks have been a much differ
ent team in 2014, entering Friday
night's game having lost six of their
first seven games.
After the win, MP head coach
Brian Nelson
downplayed the
significance of the
opponent and said
the win was anoth
er big one in a long
season.
"It's just another
step for our pro
gram," Nelson
said. "And these
kids have done a
great job. And
some of these sen
iors have been a
part of this build
ing process for
three years now.
It's just another
step for them. But
anytime you win a
football game, they have a right to
be happy a little bit, and then come
back to work tomorrow and get
ready."
Several MP players admitted that
beating Veterans did have special
importance for them, however.
Senior offensive tackle Amari
Walker said of the win: "It was
redemption. We had the region
championship last year, and they
beat us out here. It just felt good to
beat them right here."
High agreed with his teammate:
"It really means a lot because they
had beat us last year, so we weren't
going to let them do it this year."
The Bulldogs, who had pounced
early on many recent opponents, got
off to a slow start on Friday. MP's

Mary Persons fans will
look across the field on
Friday night and see a
familiar face when the
Bulldogs travel to
Milledgeville to face the
Baldwin Braves.
Former MP defensive
coordinator Lee Hannah
was hired in the off-sea
son as the head coach at
Baldwin. Hannah worked
on the MP coaching staff
for three seasons from
2005-07. He then worked
as a defensive coordinator
under another former
Bulldog coach, Corey
Jarvis, for six sea
sons at three differ
ent Atlanta-area
high schools before
taking the Baldwin
job. Prior to coming
to MP, Hannah
served as an assis
tant at Sandy
Creek under former
MP head coach
Rodney Walker.
MP will likely
need a victory over
the Braves to keep
alive the Bulldogs'
dreams of snapping a 17-
year region title drought.
MP, 7-1 overall, leads the
region with an unblem
ished 4-0 record, but the
Bulldogs have only a one-
game advantage over
Baldwin and West
Laurens. MP will host

MP JV captures area title
BY RICHARD DUMAS
The Mary Persons JV
football team captured the
area championship with a
38-2 home win over
Jackson on Thursday.
MP, which finished the
season 7-0, played devas
tating defense from start
to finish as the rival Red
Devils' only points came
on a third-quarter safety.
MP linebacker Chad
Dozier set the tone for the
Bulldogs' defense less
than three minutes into
the game when he
stripped the Jackson run
ning back of the football,
and the ball was recovered
by the Bulldogs at the Red
Devils' 45-yard-line.
