Mercer athletic director
Jim Cole of Forsyth
spoke to the Forsyth-
Monroe County Kiwanis
Club in October about
the exciting growth in
the Bears' sports pro
gram.
Cole noted that
Mercer's football team,
playing just its second
season since being
brought out of dormancy,
is already competing well
in the Southern
Conference, giving long
time powers like Furman
all they can handle.
He noted Mercer foot
ball will only get better
as it phases in scholar
ship players every year
and it will have the max
imum 63 scholarship
players by 2016. Last
year the Bears had the
best first year of any new
program in college foot
ball history, winning
seven games. Mary
Persons graduate
D’Vante Penamon is a
member of the team.
Looking ahead, Cole
said Mercer has sched
uled a game with Georgia
Tech for 2016. Cole said
he's talking to an SEC
and Big 12 school about
scheduling games as
well.
Meanwhile, Cole said
they're excited about the
basketball season and
building on last year's
win over Duke in the
NCAA tournament. He
said the Bears play
Tennessee, UGA, Seton
Hall and Texas A&M this
year. After a USA Today
reported asked him if the
win was a David vs.
Goliath story like from
the Bible, Cole said he
began studying the story
and realized that because
David was smaller he
was more agile and actu
ally had advantages that
Goliath didn't have.
Mercer is like that, said
Cole. He said they don't
recruit great athletes and
let them play, but instead
recruit good athletes who
are smart. Cole said
Duke's athletic director
said most ACC teams run
about 60 set plays while
Mercer runs 110 because
its players can master it.
In that vein, Cole encour
aged Forsyth to also
focus on its strengths. He
said Atlanta and Macon
may be Goliath, but that
Forsyth has strengths
and can be smart and
find ways to grow.
Forsyth, like Mercer, may
learn to relish the under
dog role, said Cole. Cole
noted that his late father
