Forsyth officer Thomas "C.J." Czerniejewski was working an accident against the median wall Czerniejewski on 1-75 southbound near exit 187 when he was struck from behind by a moving vehicle. Czerniejewski said he thinks it was the car's rear view mirror that grazed him in his holstered pistol, spinning him into the vehicle involved in the wreck. "It slammed me into the car," said Czerniejewski. Czerniejewski said the car, which he couldn't identify because it was raining so hard, also clipped a tire on the near by tow truck belonging to Watts Service Center. He said he wondered if it was intentional. "People try to splash us sometimes to [tick] us off," said Czerniejewski. Sgt. David Asbell said he insisted Czerniejewski get checked out, so Czerniejewski drove him self to Monroe County Hospital for tests, which didn't reveal any broken bones, said Asbell. But Czerniejewski said it'll take a few days to know for sure. “It could have been worse,” said Asbell, noting that they were for tunate the driver struck one of Forsyth's biggest and sturdiest officers. "It's like they ran into a linebacker," said Asbell. Walmart, Dollar General a mYn Kroger and CVS a County honors Veterans Monroe County turned out in big numbers to honor its military veterans on Veterans Day with a service on the courthouse square at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 as the nation paused to pay tribute to those who’ve fought for the country. Dr. Priscilla Doster helped organize Tuesday’s ceremony in front of the courthouse square memorial that the county erected three years ago honoring those from Monroe County who died fighting for America. Also dur ing Tuesday’s ceremony, Boy Scout Troop 51 led a retirement of the U.S. flag as participants dropped pieces of Old Glory into the fire, (above) which moved many participants to tears. BY DIANE GLIDEWELL news@mymcr. net The city of Forsyth decided last month to quit sending hotel tax rev enues to the Chamber of Commerce, and now the chamber has taken action to nudge city employees out of the Welcome Center on Lee Street. Both the Chamber and Forsyth Main Street (for merly known as Better Hometown) have been located in the Welcome Center since it was reno vated in 2008. Since Chamber offices are on the second floor and Main Street offices are on the first floor, Main Street employees have handled reception duties for the building. BY DIANE GLIDEWELL news@mymcr. net Site work on Monroe County Schools' new Fine Arts building should begin by mid-December. Approval from Georgia Department of Transportation to change Hwy. 41/Brooklyn Ave to three lanes in front of the new auditorium is still pending, but moving dirt can begin without that approval. Although DOT approval is expected by mid- December, a wait of three months is possible. The board hopes to get the work started before Christmas in order to alert the community to changes in traffic flow over Christmas break. Buses will still use the area, but parking will no longer be available, and the big entrance to the area will close. The con struction site will be fenced with a locked gate until the building is fin ished. The goal is to have the pad for the building in place by spring. Architect Bob Day of Adams and Day Architects in Macon pre sented updated sketches of the planned Fine Arts building to the board at its Nov. 11 meeting.
