BY KICHAED DUMAS newstgimymcr. net Monroe County Commissioners are expected to decide at a final public hearing at 6 p.m. on Thursday whether to go through with a proposed 20 percent tax hike, or cut the budget more to save taxpayers. About a half dozen citizens attended the first of three public hearings last Thursday to object to Monroe County commission ers potential raising of property taxes. Monroe County Commissioners approved on Sept. 1 raising the county’s millage rate by two mills from 9.831 mills and 11.331 mills, a 20 percent millage increase. Abraham Bloom was in his 20s when he arrived in Forsyth in 1913 and opened Bloom’s Department Stores. He was a native of Russian- controlled Poland and likely emigrated to flee Russian persecution through so-called pogroms. lYhen he first came to the U.S.. Bloom was a door-to- door salesman around Atlanta and saved enough money and established enough credit with suppliers to set up a per manent business in Forsyth.
