The Monroe County 12U All-
Stars captured first place in the
four-team 12U All-Star warm
up tournament at the Monroe
County Recreation Department
on Saturday.
Monroe County finished with
a perfect 3-0 record, defeating
the SCAA All-Stars of Locust
Grove 6-0 in its opener before
defeating North Macon in back-
to-back contests, 13-4 and 6-3,
respectively.
The Monroe County 12U Ail-
Stars will next compete in the
Sub-State Championships from
Friday through Sunday at the
Hwy. 49 South Sports Complex
in Macon. Monroe County 12U
will open play at 6:30 p.m. on
Friday on Field 4 against North
Macon.
Meanwhile, the Monroe
County 10U All-Stars placed
third out of four teams in the
10U All-Star warm-up tourna
ment at the Monroe County
Recreation Department on
Saturday.
Monroe County defeated
North Macon All-Stars Weiche
14-9 in its opening contest
before falling in back-to-back
games, 24-5 to the GA Flawks-R
of Decatur and 8-5 to the SCAA
All-Stars Blue of Barnesville,
respectively.
Monroe County 10U All-Stars
will next compete in the Sub-
State Championships from
Friday through Sunday at East
Macon Park in Macon. Monroe
County 10U will open play at
6:30 p.m. on Friday on Field 2
against North Macon.
Also, the Monroe County 8U
All-Stars placed second out of

leyball, it is hard
to train girls in
the fundamentals
in one summer to
be successful for
the JV program,”
Ogide said. “My
wish is that, fund
ing will become
available to grow
volleyball in the
area.”

sity coaches announced their
resignations last, month.
MP head volleyball coach
Lisa Ogide is moving on after
three years at. the school. Ogide
compiled a 41-63 overall record,
reaching the AAAA state tour
nament. in each of her first, two
seasons before falling short, by
a single victory of making state
in 2015.
Ogide will be moving to
Dallas, Texas, where she took a
teaching job.
“I am excited to begin a new
journey in a new state,” Ogide
said of her move.
Ogide said she felt, like she
needed a change to help ath
letes and students in a less for
tunate area of the country.
“My passion and desire is to
help programs and build com
munities,” she said. “I feel like
I’ve done all that. I could to help
build the program.”
Ogide said she thinks the
Forsyth community has learned
more about, volleyball over the
past, three years, and she will
miss coaching the girls.
“I will miss being Coach Ogide
to the girls at. MP,” she said.
“I absolutely love being their
coach. I have been with some of
them for all the years that. I’ve
wrestling coach
Matt. Gordon has taken a posi
tion at. Upson-Lee High School.
Gordon has lived in Thomast.on
for the past. 10 years and wants
to be closer to his family.
“I have three children that,
often have three different, plac
es to be on a given day,” Gordon
said. “I want, to be closer so that.
I can experience more of their
lives before they grow up.”
Gordon will be teaching sci
ence at. the high school while
also serving as Upson-Lee’s
football offensive line coach. He
said he may also coach wres
tling for the Knights, but. that,
decision has not. been finalized.
Gordon, an MP alum who
has served as an assistant,
football coach for the Bulldogs
for the past, five years, was
also MP’s head wrestling
coach during its inaugural
season in 2015-16. Taking over
for Gordon as head wrestling
coach will be last, year’s top
assistant, Barron Hamlin,
a former Jackson wrestling
standout.
“Coach Hamlin will assume
the head coach position here
at. MP and will take the wres
tling program to the next,
level,” Gordon said. “He is an
excellent, choice in my opin
ion.”
Gordon said he will greatly
miss working at. his alma
mater.
“The student athletes that. I
have gotten to know and care
for over the past, five years
that. I have been here, I will
miss dearly,” he said. “Their
stories, their maturation, see
ing a young man or young
lady realize their individual
potential and then run with
it.. I will also miss the teach
ers and coaches I have worked
with. I’ve grown so much
professionally here. I works
with some very dedicated and
excellent, teachers. We sup
port. each other here, more so
than anywhere I’ve ever been.
The coaches I worked with are
some of the best, in the state. I
formed friendships with a lot.
of these guys that, are lifelong
friendships. I’m very fortunate
to be able to say that. I worked
here. It’s been great.”
Gordon said it. was unique to
get. to teach and coach at. the
same place he grew up.
“Teaching in the same class
room that. I was a student
in is an experience that. I’ll
always remember,” Gordon
said. “Running down that, hill
on Friday night., that, never
gets old. I got. chills each time I
got. to do it., whether it. be as a
player or a coach.”
MP head golf coach Clint.
Ashmore also announced last,
month his retirement, from
teaching. However, Ashmore
will stay on in a part-time role
with the athletic department.,
continuing as running backs
coach with the football team.
Ashmore has served as the
head boys and girls golf coach
for each of the past, two sea
sons.
MP head baseball coach
Jonathan Gast.ley also
announced his resignation last,
month. Gast.ley has been hired
as the head baseball coach at.
Jackson County. His successor
has not. yet. been named.
NFL, MP alums
Harvey, Zellner
to hold youth
camp Saturday
The Monroe County Recreation Department, will
host, the 1st. Annual Youth Sprint. Camp presented
by MP alums and former NFL standouts Mario
Harvey and Peppi Zellner from 9 a.m. to noon on
Saturday, June 11.
Early registration will be held prior to the camp
from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The camp is for kids ages
5-14 and the cost, of the camp is $15 per person.
Several other former NFL players, including Evan
Oglesby, are expected to attend.
Later on Saturday, beginning at. 5 p.m. the
rec department will host, a 9 on 9 Flag Football
Tournament, for Mary Persons football alumni.
The cost, of the flag football tourney is $10 per
person, and participants must, arrive 30 minutes
early to register teams. Proceeds will go toward
the Monroe Elite Tigers youth travel football
team.
