Driver loses arm in May 26
wreck with county backhoe
A Forsyth woman lost her left arm
in a collision on Stokes Store Road
last month with a Monroe County
backhoe.
According to the accident report, by
Cpl. Kevin Williams of the Monroe
County Sheriffs Office, it happened
about 12:10 p.m. on May 26 when
Jennifer Gray of Stokes Store Road,
Forsyth, was driving west on Stokes
Store Road in her 1997 Volvo 850
near Freeman Road. A Monroe
County 2000 Caterpillar 420D
loader backhoe driven by Kelly Ivey
of Forsyth was backing up into the
easthound lane of Stokes Store Road.
According to Williams, Ivey was
reversing to park on the south side
of the road to break for lunch when
Gray’s car struck the front bucket of
the backhoe. Ivey told deputies he
was in his lane of travel when Gray’s
car hit the front bucket. Gray was
unable to provide a statement due to
her injuries, which were labeled “seri
ous” by the accident report.. Ivey was
not. injured in the wreck.
Williams said the front, end of the
backhoe swung across the centerline
as Ivey reversed in the easthound
lane toward the shoulder, coming
into Gray’s lane. The blade sliced off
the driver’s door on Gray’s Volvo and
severely damaged her left. arm. Then
Gray’s car careened over a culvert,
went, airborne and made a 90-degree
turn into a ditch across the road, said
Williams.
Gray was in and out of conscious
ness and was rushed to the hospital
where her left, arm had to be ampu
tated. Williams said that. Ivey was so
upset, by the wreck that, he was cry
ing at. the scene and has since asked
to be moved to a different, position in
the road department so that, he no
longer operates a backhoe.
Williams said he thinks the county
crew was doing erosion work but said
that, the work hasn’t, resumed since
the accident..

Mixon wins AR-15
in Reporter giveaway
Melissa Mixon of Forsyth won the AR-15 in the Reporter’s
May Gun Giveaway to celebrate the First and Second
Amendments to the constitution. Everyone who subscribed
or renewed in May was included in the drawing for the Pan
ther AR-15 from Ventures Guns and Stuff in Bolingbroke.
Mixon said she and her husband, Macon dentist Dr. Kit
Mixon, already have two and so now her children are trying
to claim the new one. Reporter publisher Will Davis said
the gun giveaway was extremely successful as subscrip
tions were up almost 50 percent over May 2015. Davis said
Saturday’s horrific terrorism in Orlando is a reminder of the
importance of law-abiding citizens being able to defend
themselves by exercising their constitutional right to bear
arms. For more on gun ownership, Ventures Guns and
Stuff is located at 8535 Rivoli Road in Bolingbroke and the
phone number is (478) 992-9009. (Photo/Trellis Grant)
