FBI officer: Americans
need to be on orange alert
Andy Smith, the Supervisory Senior
Resident Agent (SSRA) of the FBI’s
field offices in Macon and Athens, told
a Forsyth audience on Tuesday that if
people see something, they should say
something to prevent more terrorism
like the shooting that killed 50 people
in Orlando on June 11.
“It’s impossible for us to see and stop
everything,” said Smith, who was the
speaker to the Forsyth-Monroe County
Kiwanis Club on June 14. Smith was
hosted by sheriff John Cary Bittick.
Smith said that jihadists like the
Orlando killer are motivated by their
hatred of the West, of Christianity, and
of anything not like them. But he said
Americans shouldn’t be afraid, citing
the book, “The Gift of Fear,” which he
said is often touted by his boss, FBI
director James Comey. Smith said
the book notes that everyone lives
daily with a varying fear level, from
“red” being on high alert to “green”,
indicating no current threat. He said
Americans should be on “orange”, not
panic but observant caution about
what’s going on around them.
Smith said he wishes everyone could
know how many terror attacks the
FBI has halted before they happened
over the years, including many this
year. But he said they can’t stop every
thing, joking that despite the conven
tional wisdom he did not read every
Kiwanians’ text messages before com
ing to speak.
For his part, Bittick said there’s a
clear difference of opinion between the
Obama Administration, which refuses
to call it “Islamic terror”, and many in
the FBI who do. He also said the cur
rent FBI investigation of presumptive
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton
will likely be building to a major show
down between Comey and Obama. He
said that Comey is a very good leader
and that if the public will stand behind
him they can force the administration
to do the right thing.
Ga. Power building concrete
wall around Scherer ash pond
Georgia Power announced last week
that it will build a concrete barrier
around Plant Scherer’s wet ash pond
as it converts to a dry ash disposal
method within the next three years.
The power company reiterated on
June 13 that it will halt operating
its 29 wet ash ponds at its coal-fired
power plants within the next three
years. It added that it would com
pletely remove the ash from 16 of its
29 ponds adjacent to lakes or rivers.
However the company said the Plant
Scherer ash pond would not be among
the 16 removed from the property.
Instead, the company will build an
impermeable concrete barrier around
the coal ash pond to prevent it from
seeping into the groundwater.
The company said its conversion
to dry ash disposal does play in its
efforts, reported in last week’s news
paper, to buy up more land around
Plant Scherer to add more buffer to the
plant. However, Aaron Mitchell, gener
al manager of environmental services
for Georgia Power, told the Reporter
it’s not the only reason for the buffer.
Mitchell said they already have a
lined landfill at Plant Scherer to store
dry ash but said they’ll be installing
more equipment as they expand that
operation. However by keeping ash
dry, said Mitchell, the company is able
to sell more than 50 percent of the
byproduct for use in making concrete.
The company also said it will continue
monitoring groundwater at its ponds
and landfills and will share those
results.
Marco’s Pizza: We’re still coming,
now planning for August opening
Forsyth is still getting
a Marco’s Pizza in the
old Pizza Hut, but it
may be August before
it’s open.
Jeremy Carrera,
director of opera
tions for Marco’s, had
told the Reporter in
January that he hoped
to open in April. But he
said they’re opening a
lot of stores right now
and just haven’t been
able to begin work yet
in the former Pizza Hut
building off of North
Lee Street. Carrera
now says they’re hop
ing to open in July or
August.
Marco’s says it is the
fastest-growing fran
chise in the U.S. and
is currently focused on
bringing good Italian
pizza to smaller towns
in Georgia. Marco’s
already has two res
taurants in Macon, one
on Zebulon Road and
the other on Riverside
Drive.
Carrera said they’re
building one in Dublin
right now and plan to
build another one in
Macon near Mercer
University.
Carrera said they’re
looking to hire some
one locally as a gen
eral manager for the
Forsyth store. Anyone
interested may call
Carrera at (678) 332-
8070. Locals can apply
for other jobs at www.
marcospizzajobs.com.
However he said they
won’t have the Forsyth
location listed on the
website for about
another month.
Once they open,
Carrera said they will
offer a lot of specials
to bring people in the
door.
“We want to put
our pizza in people’s
mouths,” said Carrera.
“There’s a lot of oppor
tunity in Forsyth.”
Marco’s is expected to
employ about 26 people.
The KLMG LLC fran
chise covers the Atlanta
and south Georgia ter
ritories, which include
Middle Georgia. The
franchise has 54 loca
tions in its territories.
Toledo, Ohio-based
Marco’s Pizza has about
600 locations nation
wide.
Carerra said he
was inundated with
calls from job seek
ers after the original
story appeared in the
Reporter about the
restaurant opening.
He said the article led
to the hiring of one
employee for his Macon
store.
