Monroe County has wide gap between
wealthiest households and the rest
BY DIANE
GLIDEWELL
news@mymcr.net
In Monroe County, the
top 1 percent of house
holds (That would be
about 270 families) earn
an average of $722,032
annually. The other 99
percent of families in
Monroe County have an
average annual income
of $41,804, according
to a report published
by the Economic Policy
Institute this June. The
data is compiled for
2013 tax units, that is,
single adults and mar
ried couples.
This means that the
top 1 percent in Monroe
County earn 17.6 times
what everyone else in
the county does. Monroe
County ranks 626 out
of 3,064 counties in the
United States in the
gap between the highest
earners and the other 99
percent of the popula
tion.
As a state, Georgia
is 13th out of 50 in the
comparison of wealth
distribution, with the
average for
the top 1
percent at
$345,876
and every
one else at
$40,095,
an 8.6
times dif
ference.
Echols
County,
southeast
of Valdosta, is the most
unequal income county
in Georgia ($944,727
annual income versus
$21,266) and Douglas,
Ga, between Tifton and
Waycross, is the met
ropolitan area with the
widest gap ($592,858
versus $24,253).
The report says the
gap between the high
est 1 percent of earners
and the other 99 per
cent has widened since
1980. From about 1930
to 1980, it decreased
or remained level.
Nationally, the top 1
percent average $1.2
million annually, while
the other 99 percent
average $45,567 a year.
Among surrounding
counties, Bibb is 204th
out of 3,064 coun
ties nationally with
$692,889 and $31,875.
Houston is 2,660th out
of all counties nation
ally with $396,384 and
$41,407. Jones County is
2,730th with only a 9.3
times difference in the
$326,865 that the top
1 percent earn and the
$35,246 that the other
households in the county
average. Butts County
is 2,230th with an 11
times difference between
$353,886 and $32,045.

test. (Photo/Diane Glidewell)
BY DIANE GLIDEWELL
news@mymcr. net
Of the 60 individuals who
attended the mass hiring
event at Georgia Department
of Corrections Headquarters
in Forsyth on Thursday, June
16, 44 were offered jobs as
correctional officers, contin
gent on favorable results on
their background checks and
medical/physical tests, accord
ing to Gwendolyn Hogan of
the GDOC Office of Public
Affairs.
The event was one of sev
eral being held throughout
the state to recruit qualified
correctional officers. This
event focused on hiring for
Burruss Correctional Training
Center in Forsyth, Central
State in Macon and Georgia
Diagnostic and Classification
Center in Jackson. The war
dens from these three facili
ties were
on site to
interview
prospec
tive
employ
ees at the
event,
which
lasted
from 10
a.m.-6
p.m.
Those
who were
hired
will be
back in
Forsyth
for four
weeks
of basic
officer training at GDOC
headquarters before they will
report to their assigned loca
tions. The correctional officer
1 position has a salary range
from $24,322-$41,296 and cor
rectional officer 2 ranges from
$27,472-$45,884 plus benefits.
At the mass hiring event,
applicants
were asked
to bring
completed
application,
driver’s
license,
birth cer
tificate,
social secu
rity card,
high school
diploma or
GED tran
script and
SAT/ACT/
COMPASS
or other
pertinent
scores
and POST
profile if
applicable. The minimum
age for correctional officers
is 18; there is not an age cut
off. Applicants had to pass
a physical fitness test at
the event, including sit-ups,
push-ups and a mile run of 16
minutes or less. The 90-plus
heat of the day may have
made that run harder than it
sounds.
Applicants also had to pass
drug tests, fingerprint checks
and criminal information
checks at the hiring event
before they were referred to
the wardens for interviews.
There were a few applicants
who wished to work at other
GDOC facilities and, after
screening, they were referred
to the appropriate wardens.
Hogan said this is the first
time a mass hiring event has
been held at GDOC headquar
ters in Forsyth. The event
brought a steady stream of
applicants to the Vinzant gym
on the Tift campus, especially
during its early hours.
