Curves teaches fitness for life
BY ALEX KINSELLA
Curves on North
Jackson Street in
Forsyth aims to change
the lives of women of
all ages, not just their
levels of fitness. Curves
offers video-based fit
ness classes in an envi
ronment that caters to
women.
Instructor Donna
Lindsey, daughter of
owner Carol Lindsey,
says that it is especially
the camaraderie among
members that sets
Curves apart from other
gyms. And at Curves,
she says, there’s no pres
sure to get dressed in a
certain way, no pressure
to compete with men.
Safety, too, is another
key factor: Curves is
closed-door, and clients
know one another.
Classes typically last
for 30 minutes, though
more time may be taken
if Donna feels that par
ticipants need special
instruction to be sure
that everyone under
stands the workout.
The routines focus on
cardiovascular fitness,
muscular strength, and
balance.
Rebekah Adams
of Forsyth has been
attending Curves classes
for a couple of months.
Her daughter, Madison
Bright, 12, joins her fre
quently. Adams says it’s
often her daughter who
pushes her to go.
As Donna testifies,
Bright can keep up with
everyone. One of her
goals is to become more
athletic for future bas
ketball seasons.
Adams had heard
that Curves is “for
older women.” She
said, however, that
when she finally tried a
class, she loved it. She
is impressed with the
abilities of the
older women
who work out
there. One
74-year-old
lady, she said,
can climb
hand-over
hand up her
outstretched
leg when lying
flat on the
ground.
“When I’m
74, I want to
be doing that!”
Adams said.
Donna
Lindsey
attributes
much of success found
at Curves to personal
effort. Those who attend
and apply themselves
consistently, she says,
are the ones who see
results.
Curves also sells
nutrition products:
Supplements—made in-
house at a Curves lab—
Donna Lindsey in front of Curves in Forsyth
include calcium, a mul
tivitamin, and omega-3.
Curves Complete is a
customized diet program
that comes with recipes
and, if desired, a guide
for eating well at spe
cific restaurants.
Curves memberships
are $39/mont,h for a
one-year contract plus
a one-time service fee
of $59. Classes with
out membership are $4
each, though machines
are off-limits to non
members. Members can
opt to track weight and
body measurements over
time.
Currently, Monday is
Dance and Tone as well
as Body Basics; Tuesday
is a Jillian Michaels
class at both advanced
and beginner levels; and
Thursday is boxing and
legs. Classes are offered
mornings and eve
nings. Class schedules
change often—some
times according to
member needs.
Donna says that the
process toward fitness
and a better life starts
with loving the self.
When you use that sen
timent to transform your
body, “You’re a nicer
person...it projects,” she
says.
