New tree
‘towers’
over all
others
in Blount
A new “tree” was planted on
Brownlee Road near Blount last
week that should improve life
for nearby residents, and it will
do more than provide shade in
these hot Georgia summers. The
“tree” is actually a cell phone
tower that will be used by Veri
zon and three other cell phone
providers. It was erected on land
owned by Bucky and Maxine
Allen last week. Mrs. Allen joked
that the company might have
been better off installing a plain,
old tower since the new tree
tower has gotten so much atten
tion. “All the residents up here
are really excited,” said Mrs. Al
len. Mrs. Allen said they received
a letter in the mail two years ago
from a company seeking land-
owners willing to lease land for
a cell tower. Mrs. Allen said she
figured why not talk to them and
see what they had to say. Mrs. Allen said during negotiations the company had to get per
mission from the nearby historic Blount schoolhouse. The schoolhouse owner asked that
the tower be camouflaged as a tree, like the famous one on Ga. 400 in Atlanta. The Al
lens also asked that the tower blend in as well as possible, and the company has agreed.
Mrs. Allen said she thinks the tower will finally be turned on in July, and area residents are
excited because cell coverage is spotty there, she said. She said the company said the
Allens and their neighbors will enjoy really good cell service and internet service too if they
want it. She said she touched the tower for the first time on Monday and was amazed at
how real the bark feels. She said she’s glad it’s coming, but said they started to wonder
since it’s taken them two years. “I told them, ‘we’re gonna be dead if y’all don’t hurry up’,”
said Mrs. Allen. “We’ve got this huge attorney bill and nothing to show for it.” She said
they get a monthly check from the company for the land lease. (Photo/Don Daniel)

Thieves used a brick to break the window to the right at Habersham Winery.
Habersham Winery hit too
A photo on page 1A of
the June 22 Reporter
should have identified
the front window which
thieves smashed to enter
a store in Juliette on
Sunday, June 19 as the
Habersham Winery.
Betty Clements has oper
ated the store in Juliette
for 23 years.
The burglars took
about $30 in change
from the cash drawer at
Habersham Winery, con
siderably less than the
expense of replacing the
broken window, which
was incurred by Robert
Williams, owner of the
building. Clements said
the original window was
of antique, wavy glass,
which was not practical to
replace.
Williams said Juliette
has been very lucky in
the past in that its shops
have experienced few
break-ins or incidents
of vandalism. He has
already taken some steps
to increase the security of
his buildings in Juliette’s
business district since the
burglaries. He was able
to find someone to replace
the broken windows Very
reasonably’ for $200.
Clements said she was
thankful that no one
was hurt and that the
burglars did damage
merchandise or anything
in the store other than
the window and cash
drawer. She has decided
to put back up the cast
iron bars that were on
the front of the building
for years. The movie com
pany removed them when
it filmed “Fried Green
Tomatoes” and Clements
has left them off because
so many tourists like
pictures of Juliette as it
appears in the movie.
Habersham Winery
has had only one other
burglary and that was
about 15 years ago when
some T-shirts and wine
were taken. Clements
said many trains come
through Juliette and train
crews sometimes stop for
meals in town and know
the shop owners like her
that wave to them. Some
of the train crew spotted
guys down the tracks
toward Berner wearing
the stolen T-shirts. They
called railroad detectives
who picked up the men
with the shirts and wine.
Habersham Winery is
the southernmost tast
ing room for Georgia
wines from Helen, Ga.
Clements’ top sellers are
muscadine, peach and
blackberry wines. She
also sells some antiques,
‘Fried Green Tomatoes’
memorabilia and T-shirts,
including the long-time
best-selling Juliette
T-shirt that she designed.
