Taking aim at self protection
BY VICKI SMITH
G un education
and safety,
self defense,
protection and
sisterhood is
a good description of “3G”
- Georgia Girls & Guns
- a local ladies
gun club here
in Bolingbroke
founded and
organized by
Laura Giles.
Giles is also the
manager of her
father’s gun store
(Ventures Gun)
on Rivoli Road in
Bolingbroke.
3G, which
strives to empow
er, equip and edu
cate women about
gun ownership and protec
tion, began in August of
last year. Laura said since
then it has grown from
about five members to over
40 members.
3G is a non-profit organi
zation and is very simple
to join. Ladies are encour
aged to “try before you
join” and attend a free
introductory session. All
you need is to provide your
own gun/ammo.
If you don’t have a gun,
Laura can help you find
the perfect one that you
will be most comfortable
Ab
using. If you would like
to join the club, you are
encouraged to obtain a
carry permit (if you do
not already have one),
pay the $35 annual
membership (cov
ers cost of insurance,
etc.) and
join the
National Rifle
Association
(NRA). Laura
said 3G will
even donate
$10 to the NRA
toward your
membership.
Weather per
mitting, classes
jvrrvWG are held every
other week on
Saturdays plus
once during
the week. Laura instructs
on self defense and basic
target practice. As a
bonus you will enjoy fel
lowship and sisterhood.
Laura said she hears
first-hand on a daily basis
the concerns, mostly of
women, regarding safety
issues and self-defense
needs. The mass shoot
ings in the United States
among other crimes
blasted on the news all
day have left many feel
ing vulnerable about
safety, both nationally
and locally.
All 50 states now allow
some form of concealed
carry. And since Obama’s

election, the number of citi
zens with concealed hand
gun permits nearly tripled
to more than 12.8 million,
according to the Crime
Prevention Research
Center.

in 2015, according to

is driven by

ings and
fears that

late guns.

dents have applied for
permits, and 143 of
those, more than one-
fourth, are women.
Women are the fast
est-growing clientele
in the industry nation
wide as well. An
activity that has
been traditionally
male-dominated
is seeing tremen
dous growth.
With the percentage
of gun-owning ladies
at an all-time high,
Laura is encourag
ing local women to
sharpen their firearm
skills. Self protection
and independence are
driving the increase
in armed women in
today’s society.
Laura is an NRA-
certified instructor
and has been around
guns since she was a
kid. Her father, Gary

Tucker, has been a big
influence and has always
taught she and her sister
to respect guns. He gave
Laura her first gun at the
age of 16.
She has won many
awards for her shooting
expertise and is very pas
sionate about teaching oth
ers. She said ladies seem
to respond to a female
teacher better as some
times a male instructor
will take for granted that
ladies may not understand
the terminology or have
the patience that a female
instructor might have.
Whatever it is, it is work
ing as 3G is growing.
