Forsyth teen OK after wreck
A Monroe County 17-year-old was hospitalized but is expected to recover after flipping a
Davis Plumbing Truck on Hwy. 41 north on Wednesday. Drew King of Forsyth was heading
north in his Davis Plumbing 2002 Ford F-250 when he ran off the road slightly, over-correct
ed and then lost control of the truck, according to an incident report. The report said King
went into a ditch and struck the railroad tracks causing the truck to overturn before landing
upright on the tracks. The accident happened around 2 p.m. Monroe County EMTs tended
to King, putting a wrap around his head, which was covered with blood. King was taken to
Navicent Medical Center where he reportedly received two stitches and was released.
Dear Friends,
Monroe County is my home.
I attended Monroe County schools,
married here and have made my career
here. The community has been good to
me. And now, I want to give back by
serving you on the Monroe County Board
of Education.
One thing you probably know about me is
that I’ve never met a stranger. I enjoy
knowing the people of my hometown.
When I’m serving on the school board, you
can rest assure I’ll be there as your
representative. Many of you know me. I
know many of you. I have enjoyed this
campaign because it’s been a chance to
know more of you. Together, we can make
Monroe County schools even better.
Let’s do this.
Your Friend,

Dunn
continued from front
worst, said Dunn, was
called the “red devil” and
had to be injected with a
7-inch needle that stayed
in his body for 15 min
utes. It was bad, but it
was good, said Dunn.
“It sucks going some
where where they’re
gonna give you something
that makes you feel so
bad,” said Dunn. “But I
guess you’d say it saved
my life.”
Dunn said the nausea
and depression common
to chemo patients didn’t
affect him as much as
others, but he did gain
40 pounds. That wasn’t
all bad, said Dunn, since
he was 15 pounds under
weight when he was first
hospitalized with that bad
cough.
Dunn said his fiancee
Claire Humphrey took
great care of him during
the treatments, and kept
him positive during the
trial.
“She was one of the
main reasons why I woke
up each day and accepted
it as a challenge,” said
Dunn. “She was pretty
much my caretaker. On
the days I was affected
I would sit on the couch
and she would wait on me
hand and foot and make
sure I was comfortable.”
Dunn said the last six
months were so hard that
his brain has blocked out
most of what happened.
“It was a time I want to
forget,” said Dunn.
He and his fiancee got
engaged on Oct. 23, just
two months before his
diagnosis. Dunn said
after what they’ve been
through they know their
relationship has staying
power.
“When you get married,
you say your vows to stay
together ‘through sick
ness and in health’,” said
Dunn. “We’ve already
experienced the ‘in sick
ness’ part. If she can stick
with me through that,
I think we can survive
anything. We’ve gotten a
whole lot closer.”
The couple plans to wed
on May 20, 2017.
And Dunn said he’s
been overwhelmed not
just by the care of his
family and fiancee, but
also the community. He
said he realized after
deputy Michael Norris’
death how strong Monroe
County was and could be.
And in his own ordeal,
when he sees people
around town that he
doesn’t even know wear
ing supportive bracelets
his sister made, it’s just
overwhelming.
“The community was
really uplifting,” said
Dunn. “I was in the
Wendy’s drive thru one
day and this guy said
‘hey man we’re praying
for you. Hope you make
it through.’ It made me
think ‘wow all of these
people know who I am.’ I
am grateful to be part of

this community.”
In fact, thanks to com
munity fundraisers on
top of the excellent health
insurance provided by the
sheriffs office, Dunn said
he won’t have to pay a
medical bill for the next
10 years.
And there will be more
bills. Dunn will need reg
ular checkups for the next
several years to ensure
he stays cancer free. Plus
he’s still recovering from
the ravages of chemo.
“I won’t find my new
normal for another six
months,” said Dunn. “The
chemo diminished my
lung function and it could
have some effects on my
heart.”
One thing Dunn can’t
wait to do is take an
annual duck hunting trip
to Arkansas in December,
one he had to miss last
year due to his diagnosis.
“Any day I’m off, I’m
hunting during duck sea
son,” said Dunn. “I had
to miss last duck season,
which was very hard for
me. That was tough.”
When his health was
bad, Dunn said he
sometimes wondered if
he wanted to be in law
enforcement the rest of
his life. But now that
he’s on the mend, Dunn,
whose father Chip was a
Monroe County deputy,
said he’s been reminded
that he’s doing what he
was created to do.
“I can’t not be in a
patrol car,” said Dunn.
“It’s where my blood is.”
