Cabaniss Chapter donates book
BY PRISCILLA
GRANT DOSTER,
ED.D.
Cabaniss Chapter
415 donated a copy of
“History of the Stone
Mountain Memorial
Carving” by Carolyn G.
Wilson to the Monroe
County Library.
Wilson traced the his
tory of the memorial
and the support of the
United Daughters of
the Confederacy to the
effort.
The suggestion for
a memorial carving
on Stone Mountain
was first proposed by
William H. Terrell in
a 1914 article in the
Atlanta Constitution.
Mrs. Helen Plane, a
member of the Atlanta
Chapter of UDC,
responded to this article
by forming the Stone
Mountain Confederate
Memorial Committee.
Wilson’s book covers
from the original design
and work by Gutzon
Borghum to the com
pleted design by Eugene
Cox Wyatt and work
overseen and completed
by Walker Hancock in
1972.
Pictured are Miriam
Smith, left, and Cindy
Bowen, right, of the
Monroe County Library
receiving the book from
Barbara Fincher, past
president of Cabaniss
Chapter 415.
