Around Monroe County
Creative scarecrows liven
up Forsyth’s October
BY DIANE

There were 24
entries in the city-wide
Scarecrow Contest spom
sored by Forsyth Main
Street from Oct. 7-28.
Everyone got to enjoy
the creative seasonal
decorations that greeted
them around town as
The BlueTick Mercantile Co. scarecrow won 1st place.
business owners and
employees decorated
their scarecrows to rep
resent their businesses.
Those who signed up
for the contest experi
enced some
unexpected
challenges
due to the
unseasonably
hot weather.
Pumpkins do
not keep well
during sum
mer-like heat.
Reportedly
some entrants
had to refresh
and even
rebuild their
displays
before the
three weeks
ended. There
were no
estimates on
how many
crows were
scared away
from Forsyth
during the
contest.
Entrants
ranged from
elaborate
to humor
ous. The
variety of
takes on the
theme made
Forsyth
interest
ing but also
made it
difficult to
choose win
ners in the
contest. Cash
prizes were
awarded to 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place, but
kudos go to all of the
superbly creative
entries.
Abare Enterprises
had the largest
display with an
entire yard of fig
ures sporting their
specially-made,
healing ice packs.
Paul James Place
(Harris Street)
deserved an award
for the most creative
block in town with
three have-to-stop-
and-look scarecrows
with accessories side
by side.
Flowers by Helen had
the cutest scarecrow
with a cause as a scare
crow in pink reminded
everyone that October
is breast cancer aware
ness month: Save the
‘pumpkins!’ Tire Mart
took the instructions
to represent the busi
ness to heart; it made
the largest scarecrow
in town from huge tires
and associated parts and
tools. Staff Relief, Inc.
raised a chuckle and
struck a cord with many
as its scarecrow depicted
a nurse after a 12-hour
shift.
First place went to
BlueTick Mercantile
Company. Sara Jane’s
won second place, and
Robins Financial Credit
Union got the third
place award.
Other entries includ
ed: City of Forsyth,
Jane Pennington
Allstate Insurance,
CoTique Boutique,
ERA Middle Georgia
Realty, Isabelle
Waldrep State Farm,
Forsyth Presbyterian
Church, United Bank,
Trek Foster Care, The
Anvil Room, West
Mane Salon, Forsyth
CableNet, Dillard
Barber Shop and Dillon
and Vaughn, P.C.
Robins Financial Credit Union took 3rd place with its scare
crow holding money surrounded by minions with employee
names.
