Pastor’s Corner
Our veterans deserve a memorial forever
BY RODNEY
CALLAHAN
The Old Testament
book of Joshua
describes the
military cam
paign into
Canaan led
by Caleb and
Joshua. They
crossed the
Jordan River
with the chil
dren of Israel,
who were
preceded by
almost 40,000 soldiers.
(See Joshua Chapters 3
and 4).
The Lord told Joshua
to command a person
from each of the 12
tribes to take
stones from
the Jordan
River where
the priests had
stood with the
ark while the
people crossed
on dry land.
He told them
to place the
stones where
they lodged
that night in the Jericho
plains.
Joshua said the chil
dren of the Israelites
would ask, “What do
these stones mean to
you?” (Joshua 4:6). He
told them to answer that
“... these stones shall
be for a memorial to the
children of Israel for
ever.” (Joshua 4:7).
There are memori
als all over the United
States to remind us and
our children to remem
ber and honor our vet
erans. Friday, Nov. 11,
2016 is Veterans’ Day.
There are almost 15 mil
lion vets alive today in
the U.S. On Friday at
1100 hours (11 a.m.) our
veterans will be honored
on the Monroe County
Courthouse square.
This holiday originally
was called Armistice
Day in 1919. President
Woodrow Wilson pro
claimed that business on
November the eleventh
be suspended for two
minutes at 1100 hours.
The Armistice ending
World War II was signed
on the eleventh day or
the eleventh month at
the eleventh hour. This
day was also marked
by parades and public
meetings.
On June 1, 1954
President Dwight
Eisenhower signed leg
islation changing the
name from Armistice
Day to Veterans’ Day.
A special group of
Monroe County people
created stone memorials
to remember and honor
individuals who served
our country, some of
them giving their lives.
This tribute was for the
deceased as well as for
living veterans.
When our children ask,
“What do these stones
mean to you?” we can
gladly tell them.
Rodney Callahan is a
retired military chap
lain, prison chaplain
and hospice chaplain
and continues to con
tribute to the commu
nity wherever he can.
The Pastor’s Corner is
sponsored by the Monroe
County Ministerial
Association, which meets
on the second Thursday
of each month at Ann’s
Deli at 8 a.m.
