Playoffs
continued from front
High School office and United Bank before Friday,
which is a bank holiday for Veterans Day.
The Eagles, 5-5 overall (3-3 in Region 4-AAAA), quali
fied for the playoffs despite a 34-0 home loss to Eastside
in their regular season finale on Friday. North Clayton
earned its playoff berth by virtue of a tiebreaker 8-0
road shutout win on Oct. 21 over Salem. The Bulldogs
and Eagles had one common opponent in 2016. North
Clayton defeated Washington on the road 30-7 on Aug.
26. One week later, MP pounded Washington 41-0 in
Forsyth on Sept. 2.
The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Cap
Burnett. Burnett, a former standout at North Clayton,
was a starting safety at the University of Georgia in
1999-00 before suffering a career-ending injury. While
at UGA, Burnett had two career interceptions and
returned a fumble for a touchdown in a 37-14 Oahu
Bowl win over Virginia in former coach Jim Donnan’s
final game in 2000. Burnett’s younger brother, Morgan,
another former North Clayton star, is in his seventh
season in the NFL as a starting safety for the Green
Bay Packers after a stellar All-ACC career at Georgia
Tech from 2007-09.
North Clayton is perhaps best known as being the
alma mater of former UGA quarterback D.J. Shockley,
who led the Dawgs to the 2005 SEC Championship.
Shockley’s father, Don, was the head coach at North
Clayton from 1994-07 and coached
both Burnett brothers in high
school. North Clayton cap
tured two region titles under
Shockley’s watch in 1997 and
2004 while also winning region
championships in 1993 under
Maurice Tyler and 2008 under
Rodney Hackney. The Eagles
have never captured a state
championship, falling in the AA
state championship game in
back-to-back seasons in 1962
and 1963. Since then, North
Clayton’s deepest playoff runs
have come in 1997 and 2009
when it reached the state quar
terfinals.
Meanwhile, MP is attempting to
reach the second round of state for
the sixth consecutive year. If MP
defeats North Clayton, it, would
host, the winner of the first-round
contest, between Stephens County,
the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAA,
and Heritage (Catoosa), the No. 3
seed from Region 6-AAAA, on Friday,
Nov. 18. If the Bulldogs win their second-
round contest, they would advance to the
state quarterfinals for the first, time since
2012 and just, the second time since the pro
gram’s last, state semifinal appearance in 1998.
According to the Newton Citizen, North Clayton fell
behind early to Eastside on Friday, yielding a 73-yard
kickoff return for a TD by Eastside’s Eric Stokes on the
very first, play of the game. Already trailing 14-0 at, half
time, the Eagles allowed three more scores in the third
quarter, the first, on a fumble by North Clayton running
back Jaiquan Earls that was returned for a touchdown
and the other two on a pair of TD passes by Eastside
quarterback Austin Holloway. Eagles’ running backs
James Monroe and Earls combined for 116 yards on 24
North Clayton at Mary Persons

Last meeting: N/A
Prediction: MP 23, North Clayton 7
carries in the loss.
Offensively, MP is led by senior running back Zach
Harvey, who has rushed for 1,151 yards and 18 touch
downs, including 8 in his past, two games, and senior
all-purpose standout Jatori Sims, who has rushed for
470 yards and two touchdowns on 11.8 yards per carry
and caught, a team-high 23 passes for 421 yards and
three touchdowns. MP senior quarterback Caleb Speir
has also come on strong in the second half of the season,
improving his completion percentage to 53 percent, for
980 yards and 10 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions
(only 1 since the season opener).
Speir, who had never started a varsity game until his
senior year, admitted Friday that, his confidence level
has increased over the course of the long regular season.
He said, “I think from the start, I knew that, we had a
really good team and we had a chance to make some
thing really special out, of this. And I think that, my con
fidence has just, grown even more. I think we’ve
got, a shot, to go as far as what, we want, to, as
far as what, we need to.”
Defensively, MP is led by the devastat
ing pass rush duo of senior defensive
ends Malik Herring and Tre Howard,
who have combined for 35 tackles-for-
a-loss and 11 sacks on the season.
Howard and Herring are also
first, and second, respectively,
| on the team in solo tackles
with 45 and 44.
MP head coach Brian Nelson
said he has seen improvement,
from his team, which enters
the playoffs on a five-game winning
streak, as the season has gone on.
“At, certain times I feel like we’re
playing better football,” Nelson
said. “I feel like we’ve gotten
better. Like I told those guys,
‘It’s one game seasons now,
and you’ve got, to prepare.
And you’ve got, to study
film. And you’ve got, to get,
ready. And you’ve got, to
practice and do those
things with a sense of
urgency now because
there’s no games
guaranteed after
Friday night,.’ We’ll
^ , , .., , see what, happens.”
