Dogs blank Howard 42-0 on Senior Night
BY RICHARD DUMAS
forsyth@mymcr. net
The Mary Persons Bulldogs demol
ished Howard 42-0 on Senior Night at
Dan Pitts Stadium to close out a perfect.
Region 2-AAAA campaign and enter
the AAAA state playoffs with significant,
momentum.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 in Sunday’s
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC)
AAAA poll, enter the state playoffs on a
five-game winning streak. After a tight
17-14 home victory over Spalding on
Sept. 30, MP outscored its final four oppo
nents by a combined score of 129-9.
The Bulldogs, 8-2 overall (5-0 in Region
2-AAAA), will next, host North Clayton,
the No. 4 seed from Region 4-AAAA, in
the first round of the state playoffs on
Friday. If MP defeats North Clayton, it
would host the winner of the first-round
contest between Stephens County and
Heritage (Catoosa) on Friday, Nov. 18.
The Bulldogs made sure they didn’t
have a letdown against Howard after
clinching their second consecutive region
championship with a home win over
Perry on Oct. 28. MP scored four first-half
touchdowns en route to a 28-0 halftime
lead. The Bulldogs then added two more
second-half scores for
the final 42-0 margin.
MP senior tailback Zach
Harvey rushed for a
game-high 135 yards
and four touchdowns on
just. 13 carries. It. was
Harvey’s second consec
utive four-TD game.
Meanwhile, MP’s
defense was equally
devastating, limiting the
Huskies to 0 rushing
yards on 27 attempts
once sack yardage was
factored in. In all, MP
out.gained the Huskies
354-99, including 225 to
0 on the ground.
MP quarterback
Caleb Speir continued his hot. recent, play
by completing 10 of 16 passes for 129
yards and a touchdown pass to Roger
Akins. The Dogs’ defense held Howard
quarterback Avery Vining to just. 6 of 17
completions for 99 yards and a pair of
interceptions.
The game will perhaps be most, memo
rable for a late-game scuffle that led to
several penalty flags, a Howard player
being ejected and both teams being led
off the field in separate directions without,
shaking hands at. game’s end. MP head
coach Brian Nelson said it. was his idea to
keep the teams separated after the game.
“I didn’t, feel like we needed to walk
through the line,” Nelson said. “It. got.
a little chippy there at. the end, and it’s
unfortunate. Just, like I told these guys
in here after that, ‘It’s embarrassing. We
don’t want to be a part of that. We don’t
want, to do that.. And we represent, a lot.
more than just, an individual or a certain
moment, in a game, we represent, a whole
community and a whole school system.’
So I’m just disappointed that it had to
happen like that.. But. again, it’s a situa
tion where hopefully guys learn from it
