‘Everybody was wrong’
County reacts to political earthquake: President Trump

While newly-elected president
Donald Trump may have lost
the national popular vote, he
proved especially popular in
Monroe County.
The Republican candidate
Trump received 8,821 votes, or
69 percent, in Monroe County as
opposed to just. 3,570 votes, or
28 percent, for Hillary Clinton,
the Democratic candidate. By
one percentage point, Trump
actually received a slightly
higher percentage of the vote in
Monroe County than the 2012
Republican presidential can
didate Mitt Romney received
against current president
Barack Obama.
Republican District 3 com
missioner John Ambrose said
he has been fervently behind
Trump the entire election.
“I’m just glad that Donald
Trump got elected and Hillary
didn’t,” Ambrose said. “And now
with the House and Senate both
on the same side, maybe we can

Heritage
in Round 2

The Mary Persons Bulldogs will face upstart. Heritage
(Ringgold) at home on Friday with their eyes focused
on advancing to the program’s first Elite Eight berth in
four years
MP will host Heritage, the No. 3 seed from Region
6-AAAA, at Dan Pitts Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
It will be the first time the Bulldogs and Generals have
ever squared off.
Heritage, 8-3 overall (4-2 in Region 6-AAAA),
advanced to the second round for the first time in
school history with a 37-30 upset road win at Stephens
County in the first round. Heritage opened its season
with a 38-0 home shutout win over Lakeview-Fort.

Monroe County recognized its veter
ans with a program on the courthouse
lawn near the Veterans Memorial on
Nov. 11. The Veterans Memorial, which
was installed in 2010 and continues to
grow, now has 659 pavers memorial
izing individual veterans, with 20 of
them added since Veterans Day last
year.
The 2016 program had an impressive
start, with a rendition of ‘The Star-
Spangled Banner” by the Mary Persons
band, led by Director Eric Thompson.

the county to rezone his
267-acre tract, at. 955
McCowan Road from
agricultural to industrial
with a conditional use
to allow the sand mine.
The property is at. the
southwest, comer of
McCowan and Reedy
Creek roads.
Consultant. Walt. Rocker
of Eatonton said the sand
mine would not. be a huge
operation, with about, six
employees, and would not.
be an invasive process.
