MP fumbled three times in
four possessions on offense
while giving up a pair of
garbage-time touchdowns.
Alexander connected with
receiver Rayvon Kee on a
blown MP coverage for a
42-yard score with 8:59 left
in the fourth quarter. Then,
North Clayton running
back James Monroe ran
for a three-yard score on
4th-and-2 with 4:23 left in
the game for the final 45-12
margin.
With Wilson carrying
most of the rushing load,
Harvey and Sims combined
for 91 yards and three
touchdowns on just. 9 car
ries. Sims, who rushed for
53 yards, added a 43-yard
touchdown reception. Akins
led MP with 53 receiving
yards and a touchdown
on two receptions. Speir
completed 5 of 7 passes
for 131 yards and two
touchdowns with one
interception. Meanwhile,
MP’s defense limited
North Clayton to -17
rushing yards on 15 car
ries in the first half and just.
83 yards on 30 carries for
the game. North Clayton’s
quarterback duo of Lee and
Alexander combined for 93
passing yards and a touch
down on 8 of 18 completions
with three interceptions.
Nelson said he thinks
his team is getting better
each week and added MP
had perhaps its most, solid
practice of the season last.
Wednesday, two days prior
to Friday’s win. He said he
preached to his team the
importance of getting off to
a good start, particularly on
offense.
‘We’ve been talking a lot.
lately about, getting off to
a fast, start, and really kind
of setting the pace and the
tempo early,” Nelson said.
“And I thought for the most
part, we did that.. We had a
couple of little silly things.
We fumbled into the end
zone, holding calls, stuff like
that. But I thought for the
most, part., we established
ourselves early on offen
sively.”
Nelson said he’s not. too
concerned that, his starters
have sat. out. virtually the
whole second half in each
of the past, three games
because of blowout, scores.
He said the time on the
sideline has allowed his top
players to get. more rest.,
which he hopes pays off in
future playoff rounds.
‘We’ve been able to rest,
some guys, which is good,”
Nelson said. “But. at. the
same time at. this time of
year, they (our starters)
haven’t, played a full game
in three weeks. So that’s
always scary a little bit.. But.
I think it’s just coming out
every week and focusing on
a new opponent, and a new
task and really one game at.
a time.”
