Facing 3rd-and-goal from
MP’s three-yard-line, Wilson
fired a pass that was batted
into the air near the goal
line. Heritage’s Luke Grant
broke off his route and dove
for the loose football, cradling
it just, beyond the goal line
for a three-yard touchdown.
Ahlyege’s extra point pulled
the Generals back to within
seven at 21-14 with 4:20 left,
in the third quarter.
After an MP punt, it was
up to the Dogs’ defense to
make a critical play, and
senior cornerback Tyricus
Danielly was the man of the
hour. Danielly intercepted
a Wilson misfire, returning
the pick deep into Generals’
territory. However, an MP
clipping penalty brought
the ball back to Heritage’s
46-yard-line. Moments later,
while facing 3rd-and-ll
at Heritage’s 34-yard-line,
Speir threw a beauty down
the left sideline to receiver
Roger Akins for a 33-yard-
gain. Akins appeared to
cross the goal line, but the
officials ruled he was pushed
out at the one-yard-hne. On
the very next play, Harvey
scored from one-yard out on
a halfback dive behind the
left side of the line. Davis’
extra point gave MP a 28-14
advantage with 11:10 left in
the fourth quarter.
Heritage’s next drive was
done in by a high center
snap that resulted in a loss
of 12 yards that forced the
Generals to punt. MPs
offense then set out to milk
the clock, going on a 9-play,
46-yard drive that was
capped by a Davis field goal
from 31 yards out. The drive
took almost, five minutes off
the clock and resulted with
MP in front, by 17 at, 31-14
with just under 4 minutes to
play.

Needing points rapidly,
Wilson then connected on a
pair of bombs on Heritage’s
ensuing drive. He hooked
up with Taylor Dyer for 30
yards on the first, play of
the drive. Four plays later,
facing 4th-and-10 at, MPs
47-yard-line, Wilson found
Hill for 30 yards. Two plays
later, Wilson threw his third
touchdown pass of the game,
connecting with Trent Kiniry
on a 14-yard inside slant, on
the right side of the hash
marks. Ahlyege’s extra point
trimmed MPs advantage to
10 at, 31-21 with 2:35 left in
the game.
Harvey then quietly made
perhaps the game’s most
critical play when he recov
ered the Generals’ onside
kick attempt. Two plays
later, Wilson found a hole up
the middle and sprinted for
a 42-yard touchdown to put,
the game out of reach. Davis’
extra point put, MP in front
38-21 with just 1:52 left to
play.
The Generals gallantly
tried to mount one more
comeback, but after com
pleting a 15-yard pass for
a first down on the first
play of the ensuing drive,
Heritage’s Wilson misfired
on four straight throws to
turn the ball over to MP on
downs with 1:17 left, in the
game. Two Speir kneeldowns
later, and the Bulldogs were
victorious in a second-round
playoff game for the first time
since upsetting Cairo 3-0 in
overtime four years ago.
For MP, Speir completed
11 of 19 passes for 191 yards.
His favorite target was Akins,
who caught a team-leading 4
passes for 87 yards. Harvey
rushed 29 times for a team
leading 163 yards and three
touchdowns while Wilson
added 135 yards and two
touchdowns on 16 carries.
Harvey said having Wilson,
who missed three games
at midseason, healthy and
back in the tailback rotation
makes MPs offense especially
dangerous.
Harvey said of sharing the
scoring load: “When you can
depend on another running
back that can come in and
score back-to-back just like
me, it, feels really good.”
For Heritage, Wilson gave
an admirable performance in
defeat, passing for a game-
high 254 yards and three
touchdowns and one intercep
tion on 18 of 41 completions.
Wilson’s favorite target was
Kiniry, who caught a team-
high 5 passes for 85 yards
and a touchdown. MP totally
shut down Heritage’s rushing
attack, limiting the Generals
to -1 yard on 15 carries.
MP head coach Brian
Nelson said he was pleased
with the way MP responded
to adversity in the second
half after three straight
blowout wins in which the
starters sat throughout entire
second halves.
“Those kids from Heritage,
they fought,, man. They
played hard, and they played
right down to the end,”
Nelson said. ‘“But you know
I was kind of impressed with
our kids too in that we knew
it was going to be a four-
quarter game, and we hadn’t
played four quarters in two
or three weeks. I thought for
the most part we responded
when we needed to.”
Nelson said MP ran the ball
51 times on Friday largely to
keep Heritage’s spread pass
ing attack off the field.
‘When they throw the ball
as much as they do, when
you limit their possessions,
you give yourself a better
chance and opportunity,”
Nelson said. ‘We were able
to establish some things run
ning the ball. And when you
do that, then you take min
utes off the clock or time off
the clock and then you give
your defense a break, where
they don’t get as many oppor
tunities or snaps to throw the
ball against their defense.”
Kemps finish marathon
Bryan and Jennifer Kemp of Forsyth completed the
46th annual edition of the New York City Marathon on
Sunday, Nov. 5. The Kemps both finished the 26.2-mile
race in 4 hours, 13 minutes.
Smith kills large deer
Michael Smith killed this eight-point deer in Monroe
County on Oct. 23.
Although MP’s defense
yielded 254 passing yards
and three touchdowns,
Nelson, who doubles as MPs
defensive coordinator, said all
things considered, he thought
his defense played well.
“Anytime they throw the
ball, they’ve got the oppor
tunity and ability to score
quickly,” Nelson said of
Heritage. “And they did right
there in the second half right
after we scored. But I thought,
our defense answered the
challenge a little bit. I don’t
know what the final stats
were. But, we haven’t, been
great at defending the pass,
but, I thought our kids did a
good job. They dropped some
balls too, but they made
some great, catches. And then
on the flip side of that,, we
dropped some interceptions
early that maybe could have
turned the game quicker. I’m
just, happy for our kids. We
get to play another week, and
we get another chance to play
a football game.”
MP senior linebacker Vic
Henderson, who had four
tackles and several pass-
breakups, said the Bulldogs
are in no hurry for their sea
son to end.
“It’s a blessing to me,”
Henderson said of reaching
the quarterfinals for the first
time. “We’ve got a lot of tal
ent. As a senior class and as
a team itself, we’ve got a lot
of talent. We want to keep
moving.”
