in Lynn’s life. Kathy said
that Lynn started college
as a journalism major and
has always been involved
in words, writing plays for
them to act out for family
as children. She said Lynn
began working on “Well of
Rage” seriously after their
father died.
The plot takes a young
female police recruit
through efforts to solve the
cold case of a missing black
teen from the 70’s, even
though it is clear her imme
diate superiors do not want
the case solved and she is
new in the area with no
allies. She is challenged to
bring resolution to a griev
ing mother while surviving
in a hostile environment.
Lynn said the book address
es sexism and racism, but
the underlying theme is
forgiveness.
‘Well of Rage” is set in
Mobile, Ala. Lynn said the
story began to take shape
for her after she visited
Dolphin Street in Mobile
on a vacation and was
intrigued by a smoke-
filled, unrenovated bil
liard room that, seemed
the exclusive domain
of older
white
guys.
She said
the strong
female
protagonist
in Well of
Rage” is not
modeled on
herself but
is someone
she under
stands. She
has ideas for
a sequel or
two for her character in the
future.
After winning the 2015
Oak Tree Press Writing
Contest in the Cop Tales
division, Oak Tree Press
printed ‘Well of Rage,” and
it debuted on Sept. 2 at the
2016 Decatur Book Festival,
where Lynn was also a
panelist. She had previously
published and produced
short stories and plays, and
she is active with several
writers’ groups.
Now almost ready for
publication is “Another Kind
of Hero,” where drugs and
money are found in a casket
at the Pic & Pay in Forsyth
and a ghost, dissimilar
sisters and a DEA agent
become part of another story
for readers to savor.
“I had no intention
of including a ghost,
but it came to me one
morning,” said Lynn.
“It pops in and out of
the story as a narrator
and has a subplot.”
Lynn said that
as she worked on
“Another Kind of Hero”
two story lines came
together and guided
her through the com
plete story. She said
she spent a lot of time
in Monroe County while
her parents were alive and
enjoyed having the story
come together around some
of the locations she knows.
Kathy and Lynn’s mother,
Twyla Tharp, taught
hearing-impaired students
in Monroe and surround
ing counties for about 20
years. Their dad was Milton
‘Mickey’ Tharp. Kathy, Phil
and Lynn invite everyone
to come by on Dec. 5, say
‘hello,’ enjoy the evening
and maybe find the perfect
gift for the mystery-lovers
on your Christmas shopping
list.
