Perkins helps clients
plan for retirement
BY WILL DAVIS

An increasing number
of Middle Georgians are
learning to plan and
invest for retirement with
help from Monroe County
native and resident Lee
Perkins.
Perkins, the owner
of JL Perkins Wealth
Management, is an inde
pendent advisor who has
a passion for getting to
know clients and help
ing them tailor the most
effective game plan for
their financial future.
Perkins has been in the
financial planning busi
ness for 10 years, begin
ning his career at Smith
Barney, but he launched
his own independent
company three years ago
because he realized he
can serve people better if
he’s not having to push a
particular product.
“My value is not figur
ing out p/e ratios and
examining company
balance sheets,” said
Perkins. “My value is
getting to know the cli
ent, and working through
what we call a GPS pro
cess (Guiding Planning
System) to develop a
plan for them that runs
the gamut — from taxa
tion to what happens if
my spouse dies — and to
match the person with
the right risk tolerance
for investing.”
Perkins said as the New
Year approaches, now is
the best time for people
to assess their financial
situations and implement
changes.
“People are over
whelmed by their lack
of a financial plan,” said
Perkins. “They don’t
think they can do it so
they put it off. But at
some point, people have
to get serious about their
life savings. Those are
the ones I want to help:
the ones who are ready to

put a plan in place.
It’s not as painful
as people think.
There’s some work
involved, but that’s
what I do.”
Perkins offers a
free consultation
for potential cli
ents in a relaxed
atmosphere [they
usually have fresh
cookies and coffee]
so they can get to
know each other
and figure out if
Perkins can help.
There’s no pres
sure or hard sell.
“If I’m wearing
a coat and tie,
they can bet I’m
going to a funeral,”
laughs Perkins.
“I want to meet
people where they
are and see if I can
put them in a bet
ter position.”
Perkins said he
aims to put things
in layman’s terms
for clients rather
than trying to impress
them with big words.
“I lose some prospects
because I don’t come
across as a hotshot,” said
Perkins. “That’s not me.
I won’t dazzle them with
the next hot stock tip. If
you want to be a million
aire in six months, I’m
not your guy. If you want
a plan that’s not fancy,
but simply works, I can
help.”
Perkins said he’s
driven by the desire
to help people plan
successfully for retire
ment.
He’s seen his parents
do it well, and wants to
help others enjoy that
same success. His mom
retired from Plant
Scherer and his dad
from Southern Bell.
They sacrificed to send
Perkins and his broth
er to Monroe Academy
and saved money so
they could enjoy retire
ment.
“They’re not wealthy,
but they planned prop
erly,” said Perkins. “I
want to help people retire
the way my mom and dad
did.”
In fact, that passion is
what propelled Perkins
into wealth planning.
He spent several years
in student ministry, and
wound up serving at a
church with his youth
pastor growing up, Scott

Harrell, now the pastor
of Rocky Creek Baptist
Church in Monroe
County. He started listen
ing to Dave Ramsey, a
popular Christian finan
cial advisor, and was
intrigued.
“I thought, this would
be fun to do for a living,”
said Perkins.
Smith Barney hired him
in 2007, in part because
he was married with kids
and already had his own
business, the Cold Stone
Creamery in Warner
Robins. He had already
had real-life lessons in
finances.
After about three years
he was hired by a small
regional financial plan
ning firm where he spent
four years before launch
ing out on his own.
Lee and his wife, Pam,
just celebrated 15 years
of marriage. They have
two kids: Walker, 13, and
Channing, 9, who attend
First Presbyterian Day
School. Perkins said they
spend a lot of time at the
ball field with their kids,
as he’s coached Walker’s
baseball team for many
years. They live in the
Trotter’s Ridge subdivi
sion in Monroe County
but have bought land
on the river in Monroe
County where they plan
to build.
Perkins now has his
own radio show, the
Macon Money Show,
which airs at 7 a.m. on
Sunday mornings on 940
AM in Macon.
Perkins’ office is located
at 125 Plantation Centre
