Holidays are for making memories, feeling gratitude
BY VICKI SMITH

coin
hanks giv
ing has come
and gone and
since the holi
days
are fast
approaching,
I feel like it is
time for me to
deliver a festive
article featur
ing some things
lam thankful
for. I have two
reasons for this...
first because
the 1st week of
December paper
(Bolingbroke page) has
snuck up on me and
2nd because I did not
have a subject for the
Bolingbroke page this
month.
I always wonder how
Will, Diane and the oth
ers at the Reporter do
this on a weekly basis so
my hat is off to them for
such a good job!
I am very thankful
that the election season
is behind us. I was very
stressed over this elec
tion as most Americans
were. As a small busi
ness owner of a local
Real Estate Company,
I knew the future of
my business would be
affected by the outcome
and, fortunately, I
believe the right candi
date won. He and Vice
President-Elect Mike
Pence are God-fearing
men and that
alone was
enough for me.
Not only will
President-Elect
Donald Trump
be a great
President, but
I believe he
will turn our
nation around
economically.
So, my stress
level is down
and back to focusing on
the daily grind.
On a more personal
level, I am especially
thankful for my two
grandchildren, Rabun
& Collin, whom I get to
play with often now that
they have moved back to
Bolingbroke.
I love that Collin has
figured out how to say
“Nana” and says it often
just because he can. It’s
the littlest things I used
to take for granted. But
now I cherish the small
stuff, such as running
my fingers through the
children’s hair, hug
ging my dog, the tiny
sea shell Rabun brought
me back from her recent
trip to the beach, not
caring that the house is
a mess after they leave.
I don’t care if Rabun
wakes me up at 5:45
a.m. because she says
the sun is waking up. I
recently went and ate
lunch with Rabun at
school. As I was tell
ing her bye, the tears
erupted. Her sweet and
patient teacher pried
her off my leg as I hid
in the library. I and the
entire school could hear
her yelling for her Nana.
Even though I was
upset for her, I got to
thinking; I wish I could
be more like a child and
not care about wear
ing my emotions on my
sleeve.
Christmas will be
extra special this year
with a two and a four-
year-old, and I love
that I can teach them
about the baby Jesus. I
am thankful that I had
grandparents that did
this for me. At the time,
I did not realize what a
blessing it was. But as I
get older, I am thankful
for them and what they
did for me.
The joy we bring to
others strengthens faith
in ourselves.
Each year I
become bet
ter at see
ing what is
missed or
ignored, bet
ter at feeling
empathy for
others and
more able to
laugh at the
foolish. We
shouldn’t live
life with such
speed that
we forget to
make memo
ries.
My dear
mother has
been diag
nosed with
dementia
and as I deal
with her disease, I am
more aware that memo
ries become our dearest
gifts. Take time with
your loved ones and
tell them that you love
them and make precious
memories.
THE annual
Bolingbroke Christmas
Parade is two days away
as I write this. I am
thankful that we keep
the word Christmas in
our parade. It is a lot
of hard work for my
sweep off my
porch. It’s
never a dull
moment with
him around
and he always
has a tidbit of
information
about some
one or some
happening in
Bolingbroke.
I would also
ask that you
keep him in
your thoughts
and prayers.
On December
13, he will have
bypass sur
gery. He said
it is in God’s
hands and how
right he is! God
speed Jerry!
Get better soon!
Merry Christmas and
may your 2017 be very
memorable!

I would also like to
use this opportunity to
