1st graders learn to grow rood
First, graders at.
Hubbard Elementary are
exploring ways to make
healthy food accessible
and affordable through
out. all seasons of the
year. With the help of
the University of Georgia
— Agricultural and
Environmental Services
Laboratories, students
tested the soil in the gar
den plots to find out. what,
our soil needs to make
growing most, effective.
We are studying lima
bean plants to learn
about, the parts of the
plant, and the function
of each part.. Students
researched to find out.
that, we can build a
greenhouse to plant, out.
of season plants during
the winter months to
make healthy food more
accessible during this
time of year.
We are collecting 2-Lit.er
plastic bottles to prepare
for the build in March. If
you have any bottles that,
you can donate, we would
greatly appreciate the
contribution. So far our
students have collected
over 400 bottles, and
we need 1,000 more! If
you have any to donate,
email ginger, maddox®

4th graders design Monster
truck noise protection
Hubbard Elementary School 4t.h graders are hard at. work with STEM
(science, technology, engineering, math). They are in the planning stage of
the engineering design process for designing a set. of headphones that, could
dampen the noise of Monster trucks from 100-plus decibels to a safe listening
level of 80 decibels.
If only we could take our devices to the Benz for a real test when the trucks
are actually there. For now our iPads and decibel reader app will have to do...
Students in Mrs. Cawthon’s kinder
garten class have been excited about,
learning how to program Ozobot.s. The
students had to learn the ozobot.’s lan
guage which consists of different, pat
terns of colors. Each pattern tells the
ozobot. a different, motion: fast., slow,
turn around, go left, go right., u-t.urn
and our favorite, “tornado”!
Before students could program the
ozobots, we had to “be” an ozobot. and
read, then follow the directions in the
patterns laid out. on the floor. To review
and practice motion, students had to
give each other directions as they would
an ozobot.. These lessons went, along
well with our STEM project, involving
force and motion.
On our third day of ozobot. training,
the students were excited to use what,
they learned about, ozobot. language to
actually color codes for the ozobot. to
read. Students discovered that, they had
to color the pattern carefully or the ozo
bot. wouldn’t, move.
During our next, visit, to the STEM
lab, the students are going to draw
codes to tell the robots to stop at. differ
ent. “recycling bins” on the ozobot. path
in number order. We are very thankful
for Mrs. Parham who has made the ozo-
bots a fun and engaging coding experi
ence for us!
