Love of Forsyth couple
blesses the whole family
By Reggie Mays
I want to tell you all
about my parents. I
know the Reporter has
a contest every year for
‘Father of the Year’ and
‘Mother of the Year’,
and I applaud those
who have submitted
their nominations for
these honors. However,
I can’t think of one of
my parents without
thinking about the
other.
I’m not trying to cre
ate another category for
the Reporter to start an
annual event, but I just
can’t think of one of my
parents without think
ing about the other.
I have three siblings,
two brothers (David
III and Derrick) and
one sister (Sonia). Our
parents are David Jr.
and Bessie Beach Mays.
My siblings and I are
four of the most fort.u-

nat.e children to ever be
alive. We are blessed
with two parents that
have always, and I
mean always, taken
care of family.
Our mother and father
were just as fortunate
as we are to have their
mother and father to
be together until ‘death
do you part..’ That being
said, our parents had a
perfect blueprint as to
how to be great parents.
Our parents learned
from the best. They had
excellent teachers that
taught them both how
to be excellent parents.
They were great stu
dents because both of
them passed with flying
colors.
I’m 53 years old right
now, and I can’t think
of one time that either
of them disappointed
me or my siblings.
Ever since I’ve been
old enough to remem
ber, our parents have
been exactly that, “Our
Parents.” They are
just good; hell, they’re
GREAT (in my Tony the
Tiger voice).
They supported every
one of us in all of
our many endeavors.
Whether it was driving
18 hours to see a foot
ball game, a graduation,
a military ceremony or
a fashion show, they
were there. They still
do the same thing for
their grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
They are solid and well-
liked (loved) citizens in
Forsyth/Monroe County
David and Bessie Mays
and will go lacking if
they can help someone
else.
Our dad will be 80 on
the 17t.h of February,
and our Mom will be 77
on the 23rd of February.
(Oh, yeah, our aunt,
mom’s sister, Ms. Annie
Jean Beach, has a
birthday on Feb. 22.)
Both of our parents
have had some health
issues, but who doesn’t
have health issues? Our
mom beat cancer sev
eral years ago, and our
dad was right there by
her side. Our dad has
recently encountered
some health issues; Ms.
Bessie is right there.
I’m saying all that
to say this: I haven’t
seen the contest for
‘Parents of the Year,’
but I’m nominating and
presenting Mr. & Mrs.
David & Bessie Mays as
the Best Parents of All
Time. I would like for
you all to join me rec
ognizing our Mama and
Daddy as the G.O.A.T.-
Greatest of All Time.
May God continue to
bless each and every
one of you.
David and Bessie Mays have
been married for 57 years.
