A second chance, or a risky hire?
BOE: Substitute teacher with 2005 molestation conviction is no danger to kids

The Reporter has learned
that, a new substitute teach
er in Monroe County schools
has a 2005 conviction for
aggravated child molesta
tion, but school officials say
the teacher is eligible to
work and, apparently, have
confidence in his ability not
to be a problem.
“We were aware there’s
an issue,” said assistant
superintendent Jackson
Daniel. “It did show up on
his record. We vetted it and
he is eligible.”
The teacher’s name is
Javis Jabon Stewart. Born
in 1983, he was convicted of
aggravated child molesta
tion in Bibb County on July
20, 2005 under the first,
offender program, which
means he no longer carries
a criminal record. He did
not serve time in prison and
was not. considered a preda
tor. He now lives in Monroe
County and was listed as a

away on Feb.
15 at. the age of
84 after a very
brief illness.
He served the
Forsyth area as owner, direc
tor and operator of Freeman
Funeral Home, which is now at
26 Brentwood Street., for over 65
years. He also extended a helping
hand to support, local churches,
